TRips: Wednesday morning thoughts

  • Good job TR. Mid-range game is definitely something that needs to make a comeback.

Got better in the second half but considering that the first half was atrocious, that wasn't hard to do. Ha! If the guards for both teams can't make shots tonight, put the kids to bed early. This one might be NC-17. The kid from Montgomery for State (Sword) is coming off a couple of nice games. SEC freshman of the week.

My girls go to bed around 7-730. I might play some PS3! biggrin

  • Kelly to the NFL probably doesn't change where I had Oregon in the early top 10. Had Stanford ahead of the Ducks, anyway.

Mid-range game in general is pretty much a thing of the past. It's either a 3 or rim run. Same for HS now too. Was at a game last night and neither team could make much from 15 feet but they were pretty good from 20. Four dunks in the game, so the crowd loved it.

    Travis,
What is your opinion on whether the NCAA would ever consider moving the college basketball season back two months to run from January to May instead of November to March.

I've thought about this a lot and I can't find the negative for anyone. I would see this being a huge boost for SEC basketball as my personal experience tells me that our fans do support UA hoops in late January and February but November and December... not so much.

It would have to be a win for TV as you wouldn't be competing any with football anymore and you have that void in the spring where all there is for TV sporting is golf (only weekend daytime) and NBA. I'd think ESPN would love to have more college basketball.

I'm a big fan of college basketball and "the tournament" is certainly awesome, BUT in my opinion the tournament and the growth of the tournament has played a big part in killing the college basketball regular season to the point where college hoops is a 60 day sport. Leading into the tournament to watch the "bubble teams" and then the tournament itself. Nothing else matters at all.

    Thoughts?

I'm with you on what the regular season has become. I struggle to watch even ACC and Big East games these days, which never was a problem five years ago. Your suggestion wouldn't bother me, but I have to think the NCAA likes the "spacing" of its championships the way it is. Move March Madness to May and you start stepping on the toes of baseball and softball.

  • Good ending to that and nice to Rock Quarry show their respect and honor him.

As for the hoops note, I guess I'm in the minority. I could probably name 6 or 7 guys off Duke and likely 2 guys from every top 15 team.

Wooden Award candidates: McDermott(cringe), Pressey, Plumlee, Burke from Michigan, and possibly Peyton Siva?. The first 4 are slam dunk All-Americans. After that, there's a lot upper level talent that isn't elite. Muhammed at UCLA is really propelling the Bruins back into the spotlight. Best Frosh in America IMO. UK's guys are too raw. They all need another year at least. Their free throw shooting is pathetic.

Did you happen to see UT's flagrant free throws in the 2nd half vs UK last night? Missed both and they were AWFUL.

Makes me wonder what the high school coaches are teaching these kids. Free throw shooting is terrible this season and like you said, the 3 ball is trendy now and the mid-range jumper is a thing of the past(although JaMyke had a fantastic mid-range game)

Nice job. It's gotten to the point where it's easier to name the freshmen than the juniors and seniors because they're the guys who get most of the pub. I can go fairly deep with Duke and a few around the ACC. The lack of name talent in the Big East this year is stunning. There are still teams I like to watch play, namely UNC, IU, Duke and a few others. Most others are tough on the eyeballs.
