Tana Patrick..

  • Any chance this guy gets a good amount of playing time? He was one guy I was really excited about getting when he signed. I figured he'd already be starting for us by now. Anyway, haven't heard much about him in a while. Just looking for any kind of information on how he's doing

  • Going into Fall camp he is our starting Sam linebacker.

I figured our starting LB's would be Nico, CJ, Hubbard, and Trey Depreist could be wrong though.

It's always nice to see a guy persevere and get his shot. I don't know him, but he seems like a quiet guy. Could have had his pick of a LOT of schools coming out of HS, too.

    Depriest is an inside guy

    Atchison.

I would also venture to guess he would be playing a much more significant role next year when Nico and CJ leave.

So you know: Nico, CJ and Depriest all play in the middle. They just rotate based on the D we are in (base, nickel, dime).

Thanks for clearing that up for me, so there's never a time when Nico, CJ, and Depreist are all in on the same play since they all play inside?

The last time I was talking with some of the defensive coaches, they had a lot of good things to say about Tana.

The best way to describe Tana is that he is a one cut athlete. He can make a cut and make the play, but he has trouble when it requires the second move/explosion/cut. Tana is a guy that "can" play a "role" on this team. All of Saban's teams have guys like this.

This is correct. Currently you will probably see Depreist and Nico together in "Base D" which is a 3-4 set that we are in roughly 20-25% of the time. Beyond that, we spend a lot of time in "Nickel D" which is essentially a 4-2-5. In Nickel, Mosley plays Mack, and will be joined by either Depriest or Nico (at the beginning of spring it appeared to be Depriest but later reports suggested that Nico had made a move and would be on the field more... This is surprising because Depriest stepped in for Mosley in this role last year during much of the time Mosley was out with injury). We are in Nickel a lot. Probably close to 50% of the time so Mosley is essentially a starter, as he has been the past 2 years, because this role is expansive. In "Dime D" which is a 4-1-6, Mosley is once again on the field and basically the only Inside LB out there and the "Money" position filled by Vinnie (used to be Barron) walks up if we want to shift in to a 4-2-5 look, with two guys who can really cover at LB. Sorry for getting so long-winded. I could probably write a dissertation on this and still leave out some of the personnel uses in different packages.

Great write up. I hope we run the nickel as much or more this year because that means our opponents are in 2nd and long and 3rd and long.

  • Speaking of the Sam position, isn't Dillon Lee getting a look at Sam? or are they keeping him inside as well? I thought in the spring he was outside, but can't really remember.
