Tennessee is going to surprise a lot of people this year

  • I'm not saying they're going to beat us but think about it.

They return like 20 of 22 starters. They add Cordarelle Patterson (who is 6'4 and runs a 10.89 100m and probably somewhere in the low 4.5 to high 4.4 range) to their receiving core along with DaRick and Justin Hunter. Their OL should be much improved. Defense should be much improved under Sunseri. The only thing they are missing is an RB that is worth a damn.

I think TN will be a tougher opponent than Auburn and perhaps the 2nd toughest game on our schedule outside of LSU.

Look at their OL. Many had Dallas Thomas as a top 5 OT in this next draft yet they slid him inside to make way for Tiny Richardson. We missed out on JaWuan James who is another starter on their OL. I've seen some pics of Daniel McCullers and he looks more than capable of anchoring the NT spot in their 3-4.

Their weakness is going to be in their secondary which I think we expose with ease.

  • They actually have a very favorable schedule considering our conference. It could be a lot tougher than it is. Do they get solid QB play? Does the defense play better under Coach Sal (most think so) They have 4-5 games that are winnable games if things come together for them, but if anything goes the other way....they could quickly find themselves staring at more than 6 losses shrug

JMO but I think they will be lucky to win 8 games. I am not sure that will be enough to keep Dooley.

  • As long as they avoid injuries, that really affected their season last year. They'll be good for sure.

  • I think you will know after the NC State game. If they win that, they could have a pretty good year. Lose it and bar the door........

    Phoenix Bama40488

  • As said, their season will all depend on NC State and Florida. I agree that the UT game will be a bit tougher this year. I'll stop short of calling it a trap game, but it does come at a difficult stretch in the season for us. We'll win, but I don't think it'll be the massacre that it's been 4 out of the last 5 years.

Dooley is their version of Shula.....and even Shula won 10 games in 2005.

  • I think Coach Sal's impact this year is being overstated. They had a highly regarded DC last year, but he bolted. Sal has never even been a DC, so I'm sure he will have some growing pains, and their talent level on defense isn't nearly what it is on offense. Plus, I believe they will be switching up the type of defense they run, which will also come with some growing pains. I don't think UT's defense has been poorly coached, I think think they are "poorly talented".

I was talking about this with a Tennessee buddy of mine Sunday Night and I agree. The addition of Sunseri alone is going to improve their defense by leaps and bounds. I remember watching the Vols play the Gators last season and I was thinking that if Tennessee would have simply been able to tackle they may have won the game. They missed a ton of tackles and gave up conversion after conversion doing so.

It can't get any worse on D imo. They were fundamentally awful.

  • It would be fantastic to beat them in Kville, have them win the East and then trounce them again in Atlanta. I could really dig
    that.....RTR!

    JoeRio

  • They return an offensive line that's never gotten push, a quarterback who's never stayed upright, and a bunch of tailbacks that wouldn't make the 3 deep at any top half SEC program.

Then there is the defense. Sentimore walks on that field as their most talented defensive player. Malik Jackson was by far their best player on D last year, and is gone. They are also transitioning to a 3-4, and lack the requisite personnel.

And, to top it all off, the team has deep-rooted attitude problems that greatly reduce the team's level of play. Kentucky beat them last year, with Bray, and there was no comparing the talent level. In truth, their talent level probably gives them a ceiling similar to 2008 Ole Miss (with Snead and Wallace and McCluster, though UT doesn't have Michael Oher) but there is no indication that UT will approach that ceiling

    Huskypup

  • They are going to have moderate talent (good talent at QB and WR) and a lot of experience and certainly are poised to make a run similar to UA in 2005. I think the real wildcard is just how bad that locker room dynamic is as we heard ridiculous rumors last year. Can they handle adversity and do they Dooley as a leader? I don't know.

Agreed, schedule sets up favorably, but depth is an issue.
