The Cyler Miles situation is becoming curioser and curioser and is posing all kinds of dilemmas for the Bama coaching staff. We have not seen this type of drama since the missing Cyrus Kouandjio barn fax. Would the coaching staff love to have a talent like Miles? Absolutely, but there is a catch. It would be a severe breach of recruiting etiquette/ethics for Doug Nussmeier to continue to recruit a kid he worked to commit to Washington. The accepted practice is that when you leave a program, you leave the committed recruits alone as it would be bad faith to go after them. It is the type of transgression that could certainly hurt Nuss from future coaching opportunities and he has a bright future. We know CNS plays by the rules, so the situation extends to him as the patriarch of the Alabama program. Apparently, Nuss has spoken to Miles and begged him to stay at Washington, which is the right thing to do. However, here is where it gets really interesting. Cyler Miles’ father (Doug Miles) was a running back at Colorado and knows the recruiting game and what it takes to get to the NFL There is a reason that he was willing to send him all the way to Washington, when he had several options in the immediate area. That reason is Doug Nussmeier. He knows Nussmeier’s reputation for developing quarterbacks, that he has played in the NFL and is one of the bright young minds in the game. Apparently, he is not sold on the new Washington OC and has developed a strong rapport with Nuss. While Cyler has a quick release, there are some passing mechanics that Nuss could fix. There are several unverified reports that Doug Miles has requested an official visit to Bama. This poses an interesting dilemma for the coaching staff that appears to be slow walking the situation to avoid the appearance of impropriety. The other dilemma for UA relates to JW. Surely, they have told him he has a spot, but how long do they hold that spot open if a kid like Miles, who doesn’t play baseball, is available? CNS certainly has an obligation to uphold accepted recruiting ethics, but at what point do you have to take into consideration what is best for the kid? If it is Doug Miles that is making the overtures, do you bring the kid in for a visit? One option would be to bring the kid in on an unofficial visit where the family bears the expense of the trip and it is clear this is something initiated by the family. This is certainly an interesting situation that bears watching. Now a few words about Cyler Miles’ QB abilities. While listed as a dual threat QB, he is not a run first or option quarterback. He wants to work from a pro set and Alabama is a good fit (and Doug Miles knows that). We saw his passing accuracy in the U.S. Army game (co MVP), but with 4.4 speed he can certainly run if he has to. At 6’4” and 220, he is more physically mature than JW and won’t take the pounding of playing two sports and can work in the weight room and his mechanics with Nuss in the spring. While you have to love the local kid, between the baseball and the FSU drama, Miles may actually be the better fit for UA. This has turned into a chess match that may play itself right up to signing day. Clearly, Bama has two decision points: What to do with this ethical dilemma and how long do you wait for JW?
