  • Well explain to me how we won national championships in football playing in that dump in B'ham. It certainly didn't stop good players from wanting to play for us then.

our football team was a well established dynasty. Players came here to play in the UA program for CPB.

Our baseball team is no dynasty. We're trying to re-establish our relevance. Players need every encouragement possible to come here

You do realize that Legion Field wasn't always a dump? There was a time that it really was "The Football Capital of the South."

Your comparison is ignorant and obtuse.

Every program at the University has had an extensive upgrade in facilities except baseball. All they have gotten is a brand new scoreboard that was promised to them in the early 2000's and finally showed up a couple of years ago.

  • Well that would be great news. I know how much I love Bama, and I use to Officiate College Baseball here in Texas and the first time I saw that field, I was surprised. Not saying it was bad but it does need to be upgraded. If you want to recruit the best you have to have the facilities along with a coach. Hopefully they will. Roll Tide. Roll

No reason for name-calling but your point is spot-on. We have almost always been near the top of CFB with our football facilities and Bama football has almost always been able to sell itself. I stress the *almost* part both times I used it. That said, times have changed a lot and kids really take the facilities into consideration when making their decisions. There will still be players who come to Bama no matter what, but not many of them would. Even Saban would have a difficult time selling the program if we had the 10th or 11th best facilities in the conference, which is what Gaspard is trying to do.

Really? Folks in this very thread have mentioned "UA renovated the locker rooms, coaches offices and scoreboard 2 years ago." and "They just finished a players lounge as well."

I'm not arguing that more improvements aren't needed but that's a lot more than a scoreboard.

If you want to see a crappy major college baseball stadium, come up here to UW in Seattle. For years they've been playing at Husky Ballpark, which is really nothing more than scaffolding with plank wood seats and a concesson trailer propped up on a gravel lot adjacent what is actually a nice baseball field. The press box is literally a tent on top of scaffolding. And they don't even bother to keep the planks painted. They are finally getting around to remodeling it but, phase 1 is a team facility (locker rooms, lounge, offices, etc) that will replace the current "facility" in the butt crack of the basketball arena about a 5 minute walk from the stadium. The new team facility will be shiny and new and sit next to that rotting heap in the linked photo until they can drum up the $10 million to pay for the rest of the stadium, which I doubt will be too soon since they're dumping almost $300 million into the football stadium as we speak.
