The Playoff Is A Good Thing...

  • But, am I the only one that thinks the next "controversy" will be "WHO IS RANKED #4". Now, I realize the official plan has not been announced, but I would be shocked if it was anything other than BCS rankings of 1-4 for the playoff. Which in my opinion the team ranked #4, takes the place of the team currently ranked #2. Don't get me wrong, I am for the playoff... I believe it will only further define the greatness of the SEC, if it is done correctly, but I do not see resolving alot of the controversy and drama we have almost every year.

You have to stop somewhere, if you had 8 teams it would be No 9. Look at the Basketball playoff, they are always talking about who is left out. It has to better than what we have now. RTR

The controversy and drama are part of the fun of College Football. It also does not take away from the regular season.

  • There is a world of difference between arguing about who is #2 and who is #4. 90% of the time the 4th and 5th place teams are going to have a loss or 2. Win all your games, you'll be in the playoff (expect maybe for the 2009 season, where 5 teams went undefeated, but this included Cincinnati, Boise and TCU, with Cincinnati's best non-conference game being Oregon State, Boise's being Oregon, and TCU's being Clemson, so the strength of schedule could separate these teams).

I'm curious to see how they decide on the selection process. The BCS and its secret computer formula's probably won't be warmly received, but I don't know that a selection committee would be widely approved of. I personally prefer the idea of a selection committee, but that can easily be screwed up. I'm worried if we get a selection committee, they will limit the eligible teams to conference champs. Philosophically, I can't argue with that limitation, but it would be disappointing based upon this past season.

Until every team is allowed into a playoff, there will always be controversy. Let's just draw some lines and let everyone know the benchmark they have to meet to make the playoffs.

  • This playoff system just increases out chances for playing for a National Championship. Bama with 1 loss and maybe 2 losses will get in more often than not.

There is always drama and controversy. Hell, they still debate which teams got screwed when they don't make the NCAA tournament. Now, this move is in the right direction. The BCS presidents have figured out a way to control the money and have a lil 4 team playoff. I'll take it!

You can't only allow conference champs when you only let four teams into the playoff IMO. It's ridiculous to try and say the Big East champ deserves to be in over the SEC runner up in any of the past years since Miami left the Big east. Philosophically I am opposed to it. I hope they don't screw this up by putting in an asinine rule like that one. The SEC presidents better not agree to such garbage.

It's not a beef about being the national champion, it's the beef about not getting in, getting their shot. Which will never go away no matter what system is used.

Same thing essentially. Say it works out like this...

    1. Alabama 12-0
    2. Michigan 12-0
    3. Florida State 12-0
    4. Southern Call 11-1
    5. LSU 11-1

LSU has no case and USC doesn't really either. Sure, they'll bitch about who gets in but it doesn't really amount to anything as both are 11-1 and not 12-0.

That's why I wish they would just do a plus-one.

agreed. But that has been my fear this whole time. Listening to Kramer and Brando and all the idiots that just HATED that we played LSU in the NC Game, their WHOLE intent is to prevent this from ever happening again. If we had not had "the rematch", the other conferences would've been just fine and actually opposed to the whole thing.

I don't feel very easy with this whole situation.

What's the difference between a 4 team playoff and a plus one? Serious question.

I was under the assumption a plus-one wouldn't be necessary in years where it wasn't applicable.

  • As long as there is no conference champion tie-in, we will always recieve the benefit of the doubt in every 1 loss or 5 undefeated team scenario. We are the most significant CFB program in America. Notre Dame is way on back now. They have just made the decision to expand the Bryant museum a no brainer.

I'm ok with a four team playoff, but watch the big10, PAC 12 and big 12 push some stupid requirement that only a conference champ can be in the four. Not sure how that would work because they'd have to exempt teams like Notre shame. Definitely won't be for something like that bc it will only screw the SEC. Hope Slive has the support to put an end to any nonsense in this deal.

Your first sentence is the key.

IF they can keep that whole mess out, I can live with it. Otherwise, it blows and will get us screwed, as it would have this year had it been that way.

  • No. That has always been the concern about a +1. The current argument is that it is better worrying about who is 4 or 5 than 2 or 3. It won't fix the issue of that.
