The case for and against Anthony Grant

The fact that you are comparing the two tells me all I need to know. You know how many winning records in the SEC CMG had in his 11 seasons with Bama?? 3. CAG has had 3 in a row in his first 4 years. And dont give me the league sucks now crap b/c its not like the SEC has been a juggernaut the last decade and a half. The fact that you are even questioning whether CAG is an upgrade from CMG is ludacris. The proof is in this season, look at what he has done with a VERY talented preseason top 5 NC State team.

    edit: ninja'd somewhat by nash

re: the SEC now compared to then. Lets not let facts get in the way or anything. kenpom ranks conferences every year by averaging the offensive and defensive efficiencies of all the teams.

2003-2009 (the period I looked at for CMG):
SEC averaged a rating of .8398, good for a conf rank of 3.4(th) on avg out of ~32 conferences

    2010-2013:
SEC averaged a rating of .7785, good for a conf rank of 5.5(th) on avg out of ~32 conferences

The AVERAGE SEC rating from 2003-2009 was higher than any single SEC season since then. So yeah, the SEC is garbage right now and finishing over .500 doesn't mean you're doing a good job.

And btw Gottfried has actually done ok at State. The five years before he took over, they were around .500 every year with an avg rank of 79. His first year they made the S16 and were ranked 35th. This season they're 40th so far. I'd take that over what we're seeing right now.

^^^my point exactly. This season they are 40th with a team full of NBA players that was a preseason top 5 team. CMG consistently underachieves as a head coach.

I completely agree with that. He's doing pretty much exactly what he did for us. He gets some talented players and then underachieves because I don't think he's an especially good coach.

And that's MY point exactly. When you compare the bad product he was giving us to the one Grant is putting on the floor now..they look pretty similar to me. We've just flipped which half of the court we're terrible at.

CMG teams were also a lot more talented than CAG teams ( CMG could recruit)

CMG players: Dudley, Hays, Chuck Davis, Davidson, Hendrix, Mo Williams, K Winston, Grizzard, Wallace, Steele, Gee.

Some of this is CAGs fault, some bad luck, injuries, down instate talent, whatever you want to say, it is what it is.

Would Bama have more wins or less this year with CMG as our coach??

I just think and have been saying all along that if we had a couple of legitimate big guys, this would be a really good team and we wouldn't be having any of these discussions.

I really don't know why you're still trying to argue against facts, but here's some more for you.

Dudley, Hays (not recruited by CMG anyway), Mo, Grizzard, and Wallace were before Rivals..so I can't compare them. It's fair to say Mo and Wallace were both 5* guys.

Here are the more recent ones that you named as the stars of the CMG era:

    Davis: 3*, 22nd PF
    Davidson: 4*, 11th PF, 69th overall
    Hendrix: 5*, 3rd PF, 9th overall
    Winston: 4*, 5th SF
    R. Steele: 5*, 4th PG, 24th overall
    Gee: 4*, 10th SG, 33rd overall

Now here are some guys currently on the team:

    A. Steele: 4*, 21st SG, 89th overall
    Releford: 4*, 23rd PG, 90th overall
    Cooper: 4*, 12th SG, 49th overall
Gueye: 4* JUCO, not incl in rankings
    Jacobs: 4*, 12th C, 90th overall
    Lacey: 5*, 6th SG, 24th overall
    Randolph: 4*, 8th SG, 30th overall
    Pollard: 5*, 7th SF, 22nd overall

And then Hale and Taylor are also both 4* and top 100 overall players.

Those lists look pretty similar to me, and I should point out all those CMG guys weren't playing together on the same team. If anything we have more "rivals talent" right now than we've ever had at once.

So I ask the question again: does Grant not know how to recruit (and just goes by Rivals rankings?), or does he not know how to develop and coach these guys up? It's one or the other, maybe some of both.

To answer your question about whether CMG or CAG would have more wins right now, I honestly don't know. And that's definitely a problem.

CAGs recruitment of post players is what has been the problem. That is what I am critical of him about. Here is another fact; Davis, Davidson, Hendrix, Steele, Gee all played on the same team in 05-06. Not a bad squad.

Looking back...that was a pretty damn good team.

But I think those players got progressively better. Davidson was a goofy, lanky, uncoordinated turnover machine when we signed him but full of potential, and he became a reliable player for us in time. Steele was just solid. No flash, but just a really good college PG who brought it every night.

I never really thought Gee would amount to much because I just thought he was a human highlight film - but not consistent. But he's still in the NBA right now. He really put it together.

That's sort of my point, though. I think the guys we have right now could make similar progressions, and maybe they will. Looking back, those CMG teams weren't infinitely more talented on paper than CAG's squads. CMG's teams were more balanced and those guys got better over time, so hopefully we'll see the same evolution with their current roster.

I know I don't sound like it - but I'm hopeful. And I'm darn glad we're winning ugly rather than losing ugly.

  • To be fair we need to let Grant's big men have a career before we start comparing them to the guys in Bama's past.

Davis scored 1 pt per game his freshman season, then 11 his sophomore, 14 his junior year and 16 his senior season.

Jermario 2 pts freshman, 7 pts sophomore, then 14 and 14 in junior and senior seasons.

To include them in a list then complain about big man play at this point is disregarding the facts that both of those guys had to develop in college first. Jacobs career isn't over. He is a sophomore. I don't see him becoming a 14 point per game guy but I didn't see that with Davidson either at this point in his career.

Everyone wants to make rash judgments on what's going on without giving the product time to develop. There hasn't been anyone come from this state since Grant has been at Bama that would be of the caliber of EDud, Jamychael Green or Hendrix who were all in state guys.

At this point Grant has recruited one big man bust in Gueye, a guy who is only a sophomore in Jacobs and a guy who was showing improvement before getting hurt in Engstrom. Big men take time to develop. They have to toughen and learn to play in what is a drastically different game than being in high school where they are a foot taller and 50 lbs heavier than their competition.

That is sort of why I am defending his player development. The players that posters on here are complaining about that haven't been developed are all Sophomores. Lets let them get through a couple of years before we say they are not being developed. Everyone gets spoiled and impatient and thinks anyone that we land (Pollard and T Lacey) that UK is also recruiting should be a one and done, bc that's what UK has produced as of late.
