Thoughts on Clemson recruiting

  • The commitment of RN shouldn't really come as a HUGE shock to us. It was surprising, but look at Clemson recent recruiting. While they never sign top 10 classes, they seem to land one or two huge stars every year (spiller, bowers, Jamie Harper, watkins, the lb from Florida last year(can't remember his name), now RN). All of these guys were top 15 or so guys if I remember correctly. It is kind of a mystery how this team never signs top recruiting classes but seems to already get one of the top guys in the country every year. I have never been to Clemson so I don't know much about about the campus. Anyone have any opinions on how they seem to always land the big one when they don't has a good class to go with him and on field results aren't exactly the best?

  • Dabo is an excellent recruiter. & isn't afraid to do what it takes to get his guy. He got a majority of the talent when Bowden was the coach.

  • They cheat, my uncle is Danny Ford and my cousin is current TE coach in Danny Pierman. The younger Danny has had numerous occasions of giving impermissible benifits which is why he was let go from Maryland and Duke. Since he and Dabo go way back at UA that's why he is there. Clemson is dirtier than a hooker in a trash can guys. But since they are one of the ACC flagship schools in terms of football they won't touch them...ACC that is

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

Reckless comment. So the ACC knows they are cheaters but won't touch them. That is silly and ignorant. You really should think before you communicate to others.

  • Its pretty simple when you think about it. Some of these blue chippers know they will be in the NFL regardless of where they go. So the choice comes down to whether you want to work hard and play for championships or do you want to go somewhere where there is little pressure and you'll start from Day 1. Unfortunately, not every kid wants to do what it takes to be a champion.

This might be harsh, but I have little respect for a recruit who chooses to play in the ACC when he had legit SEC offers. Of course there are exceptions.

I think the best way for me to try to explain it is by using the NFL free agency. Some teams go after high profile players in order to get the final piece that will result in them "getting over the top". This usually helps short term but hardly ever results in the ultimate goal of getting a ring. The teams that choose to not over pay or reach on a player and go about it the right way (N.E. or Pitt.) compete at the top level year in and year out. This is kind of the way i view Clemson. They are the team that will give up too much in order to get that piece (give scholarships to kids that might not normally give them to) that they think will get them over the top. The irony is that this may result in short term success (ACC title here and there) but it keeps them from having any shot at taking the next step in becoming nationally relevant every year. It affects there depth year in and year out and that is why they can have short term success and lose games they shouldn't consistently.

This is all an educated guess on my part as to why i think Clemson can occasionally land the 5 star stud but yet hardly ever recruit top 10 classes and remain a 2nd tier program. Just my opinion.

  • Clemson signed a top 5 class just 2 or so yrs ago. Dabo and team is a great recruiter. Whats interesting to me is that I always thought it was Rumph that landed these guys. Every article in that year was a recruit saying how great Rumph is. Therefore, I naturally assumed that we would start getting our pick of the DL recruits once Rumph switched to the good guys.

But seriously, Dabo seems like he would be a fun coach to play for... and even if there's merit behind it, can we please not say that they cheat? There's just no point.

  • Clemson is like Auburn. The kids who like that type of campus really like it. They'll never be able to recruit 25 studs in one class like Bama but they can sign a couple great ones who just seem to be drawn to that small town like atmosphere every year.
