***Thoughts on Dee Milliner ....

  • Do I think he has top 10 pick ability? Yes. If I were a team picking in the top 10 of April's draft, would I take him? Probably not. Why? Because with the way the rules are set up (and will continue to change if favor of the offense) it's becoming more important for corners to be able to tackle than anything else. In other words, you can have all the speed and hips in the world but you're going to have a tough time dealing with NFL receivers in the current climate.

Now, in a year like this one, when there isn't an abundance of sure-thing talent at quarterback, defensive end and wide receiver, perhaps I'd give stronger consideration to a corner in the top 10. But if there are strong options at any of those three spots (and offensive tackle), that's where I'd be looking. In fact, I'm starting to think that having a great coverage linebacker is more important in today's NFL than a good corner.

Understand, my thoughts are more about the direction the league has and will continue to take and not Milliner's ability. The NFL has pretty much rendered corners defenseless.

  • Really don't get the point of this post, but if your trying to suggest that Dee cant tackle, I respectfully disagree. Dee is one of the better tackling corners in this draft, very physical, and has the elite speed that's coveted in a CB. An elite CB will always be important, but I guess if a team has a huge need at CB, you can just wait until the 2nd round and get honey badger and he hope he stays off weed long enough to make it to a game.

  • Depends on how bad you need a CB. You need one real bad, then how capable is Dee Milliner in filling that need.

  • 15 years ago Milliner is top 5 and Lacy top 15 pick. Times have changed.

Well I guess every NFL coach, scout, and executive doesn't know WTF there doing. Don't draft CBs, there meaningless! Teams like the 49ers show what you can do with defense in the NFL, it's not like just because it's a passing league their going to give up on defense.

  • I don't think he's doubting Dee's tackling abilities, just stating that a corner being able to tackle matters as much as speed.

  • Go ask the Jets how much fun it was playing without Darrell Reavis. Corners may be playing with their hands tied behind their back but the difference between a good one and a bad one is giving up points in the 20s vs. 30s and 40s. Ie. wins.

Totally missed the point. Didn't say he couldn't tackle, didn't say he wasn't physical, etc ... Actually, part of the POINT WAS that he won't be able to use much of the physicality he displayed while working against Eifert. The five-yard chuck rule has neutered corners in the NFL. Watch 10 minutes of any NFL game and you'll come to understand that. I DO THINK a team will take him in the top 10 picks. I also think that part of that will have to do with a lack of legit QBs, DEs and WRs in this draft. I'm a Jags fan and they could use Milliner. But with the way the game is played these days, I'd rather them take Warmack at 2 than Milliner.

I completely understand. My post was not geared towards the point you're making. My post was just to make fun of the fact that if anyone else other than staff posted that, they would get drilled.

Guess who had the NFL's No. 1 defense this year. The Pittsburgh Steelers. Where did they spend the playoffs? Meanwhile, the Super Bowl Champions had the NFL's 16th ranked defense (out of 32 teams).

Gotcha. Posts like the one to start the thread bring into question the overall reading comprehension skills of those aged 5 and older in our country. Haha!

  • I actually hate the direction the NFL has taken and don't watch as much compared to 10 years ago. It resembles the B12 with all that passing and no defense. I'll always watch the Bama players but sometimes find it hard to watch a casual game.

Better yet, go ask the Jets what it's like playing with a QB like Mark Sanchez, a porous OL and no playmakers at wide receiver. BTW, the Jets ranked 8th in total D in 2012.

Correct, but you probably took the time to actually read all of the post. Ha! Not about Milliner's ability. All about the Arena approach the NFL has taken with offense.

  • I believe everyone is missing the point here... Travis never stated Dee was not a top 10 pick. He simply stated the obvious, however, Dee will be a security blanket pick for Detroit or another team in Top 10. GM's and scouts know exactly what they're getting when drafting a db from Saban's scheme. Are they getting a franchise player by selecting Milliner in the Top 10? IDK future will tell but I can gaurantee there won't be a drastic transition from CF to the league. NFL is a win now league and Milliner is a safe reliable pick that'll be ready to be a teams 2nd db the moment he steps on the practice field.

    cdstreet

  • Travis is right. This is a pro offense league now. You can have the top defense and still not make the playoffs. ( re: Steelers like TR said ) you better be able to score 28+ points per game now.

    ARS4UA

  • I like this thread. I would argue there is a greater need for speed corners who can tackle to off set the lack of contact being allowed. But I want Dee picked in the top 3 so I'm bias.

I think he'd even be a safe pick for the Jags at 2. But in an offense first league, he wouldn't get them closer to making the playoffs than a legit QB, OT or DE would. Now, Detroit has many of those pieces already in place, so it would make a lot more sense for them at 5.

From a rules standpoint, there is a big transition to the league for corners. Some of the plays Milliner made on Eifert would have drawn a flag in the NFL. I think he'll actually be better in press than off coverage early on.
