***Thoughts on Dee Milliner ....

  • Travis Reier said...

Understand, my thoughts are more about the direction the league has and will continue to take and not Milliner's ability. The NFL has pretty much rendered corners defenseless.

    TR

    Agree.

At first I read, "rearended corners defenseless."

Thought we were getting another Te'o post for a second.

  • Travis I think part of the problem is folks on here are not connecting dee's talent vs the nfl game as it stands today. I would not pick a corner that high(top 5) unless I played in a scheme like San Fran or the jets that use their cb's in a lot of man to man a lot

  • Baggy I agree. If your not playing a lot of press man with the corners then that's a wasted pick

Do I think he has top 10 pick ability? Yes. If I were a team picking in the top 10 of April's draft, would I take him? Probably not. Why? Because with the way the rules are set up (and will continue to change if favor of the offense) it's becoming more important for corners to be able to tackle than anything else. In other words, you can have all the speed and hips in the world but you're going to have a tough time dealing with NFL receivers in the current climate.

Now, in a year like this one, when there isn't an abundance of sure-thing talent at quarterback, defensive end and wide receiver, perhaps I'd give stronger consideration to a corner in the top 10. But if there are strong options at any of those three spots (and offensive tackle), that's where I'd be looking. In fact, I'm starting to think that having a great coverage linebacker is more important in today's NFL than a good corner.

What I like about BOL in relation to other sites is the professionalism of the staff and the excellent writing. I also appreciate staff opinions written from what they really think. I am suprised at the down votes for your honest opinion...all you have to do is visit the site across the state and many others and read all the homer worshiping nonsense to see what they are missing in regards to quality writing. Travis, I respect your opinion although if I owned an NFL team and needed a DB I would jump on Milliner, because he is a winner trained by the best. It is real honest opinions backed up by thoughtful reasoning that make this site what it is...so +1 to you for going against the grain to express an opinion. Keep it honest and keep giving us Bama folks your real thoughts.

Gotcha. Posts like the one to start the thread bring into question the overall reading comprehension skills of those aged 5 and older in our country. Haha!

Post like the original bring into question the writing skills of everyone 5 and older in our country! Instead of insinuating that the posters in this thread lack reading comprehension skill, you might want to question how the OP was written, as your "point" was not articulated very well, and judging by the downvotes I am not the only one who misinterpreted it. You ask yourself why you wouldn't take Milliner in the top 10, and then the first reason you give is how important tackling is!

  • I don't understand the down votes either. However, as a counterpoint to Travis argument in the top 10, most people are locking Detroit into milliner pick with the #5 pick overall. Their corner play this year was atrocious and they have to play Green Bay twice & Chicago twice with there big receivers. To get to big game probably have to get by Atlanta as well. In other words with all the 3 & 4 wr sets its great to get a tall, physical db for all the matchups they be up against. Just my 2 cents

Got no problem with differing opinions. Semi-expected that this might draw some negative responses. That's cool; made for good discussion for the majority of this thread. Problem is, a few read a sentence or two and have no real clue what the opinion being offered is (other than it doesn't say a UA player should go No. 1 overall). Takes all kinds, I guess.

  • It will be very interesting to see what Detroit does at corner between now and the draft. If they get to the draft without making some moves next month, then Milliner definitely makes sense. Remember, though, free agency cranks up in March. My Jags have some corners they'll let go to the Lions on the cheap. (g)

Better yet, go ask the Jets what it's like playing with a QB like Mark Sanchez, a porous OL and no playmakers at wide receiver. BTW, the Jets ranked 8th in total D in 2012.

    TR

And 7 of the top 10 teams in scoring defense made the playoffs. We can play this game all day, but it's hard to believe you would argue that good corners aren't critical to winning in he NFL.

I think they're important but there's absolutely no question that they're ability to affect the game has been seriously compromised. Period. Tell me, without googling, who were the Ravens' two starting corners this season? I know I can't do it.

I know you were joking, Travis, but I think we can both see the fallacy in your logic. (These guys miss sometimes or even often... therefore these guys' opinions don't mean anything). We all understand that these guys miss sometimes, but they are the coaches who see the game close up and know it better than anyone and the owners who have enormous financial incentives to chose correctly. Four corners have been top 10 pics in the past 3 years and they are the fifth highest paid position counting the top 5 salaries at each position (in fact, top end corners made within $1 Million of what top 5 WR did in 2012). I disagree with your assertion that elite Wide Receivers are markedly more valuable than elite Corners. A CB shutting down a WR is harder than a WR separating from a corner, as you already stated. Wouldn't it follow logically, then, that the number of people with the talent level to match up with #1 WRs is fewer than the number out there with #1 WR skills? Therefore, if you find a guy who can match up with a WR, it seems that he would be more valuable than the receiver himself from a pure supply perspective. Of course, demand must also be taken into account, which I recognize would likely favor the WR, but I still think that it's remiss to ignore the supply side of things and only take demand into account. I think that may be why your analysis is out of line with that of the experts and the rest with a skin in the game. I like the boldness of the claims. I just disagree with them.

One thing I know to be true: We tend to adopt and repeat certain beliefs we've had heaped upon us over the course of time. Hey, I've done it myself. Got no problem admitting it. And one thing we've been told for the past 35 years or so is that the cornerback position is a building block for championship teams.

However, as we all know, the Sunday game has changed. Dramatically. It's no longer 1980. Lester Hayes isn't starting at corner for the Raiders and holding receivers -- while coated in stick 'em, no less -- all over the field. To an extent, that's probably a good thing.

Sure, you want corners who can cover elite wide receivers. I guess the question is, what is your definition of "covering"? Today's NFL corners are allowed to press at the line of scrimmage and run with wide receivers. Anything more than that and the flag is coming. Complicating matters for those guys is the fact that they are no longer supported by safeties who can take away the middle of the field without the fear of flag/fine/suspension.

Yes, the select few who are actually capable of thriving under the current setup will be compensated handsomely. But for the most part it will basically resemble the Washington Generals (defensive backs) vs. the Harlem Globetrotters (wide receivers). And the Generals aren't the ones everyone pays to see.
