Tide close to flipping snapper?

    Question as to the grading system: What does a long snapper do wrong for them to deduct so many points giving him a grade in the 70s?

    I agree--how is he the #1 LS in the nation with a grade of 76? Is 247 saying the LS is not important to the team's success? I don't believe CNS would agree with that assessment. For the kid's sake, please re-evaluate his score.

The trainers are the hydraters...you are correct in that they work their tails off...if they are not a step ahead of the coaches the team loses valuable minutes during practice and if this is a chronic thing you are unemployed. Most on here would be alarmed at what these guys do, how well they do it, and the value a coach places on "his manager".

    Question: Is Tinker on scholarship? Or is any other snapper on scholarship? Or when is the last time we've had one? I'm not sure about the answer, but I am 30 years old and unless I've missed it we've never offered a long snapper. At the same time I can't remember long snapping ever being an issue. I know the "Saban has a plan" crew is going to get me for this, but most major programs manage to have solid special teams without offering snappers, kickers, and punters scholarships every year. Matter of fact, we offer them and our special teams still stink. I'm not being negative, I realize we are Champs, and I realize Saban is the best. Let me go ahead and get that out of the way, but that does not mean I have to agree with everything he does.

    It just doesn't seem that confusing to me. I mean obviously because our long snapper graduates this year and none of us have any idea how good or bad the players behind him are. If all walk-ons were created equal and there was an endless supply of Carson Tinker clones ready to jump in and continue what we have been doing then I agree the scholarship offer is unnecessary. But of course that’s not true and the coaches obviously don’t believe that to be remotely accurate. To make a definitive judgment of the move without having a clue as to what we have or don’t have behind the senior (Tinker) is crazy to me.

    imo, you are completely within your right to question Saban on this. I bet he questioned it himself, especially given that he has never offered a long snapper in his career.

    My best guess, he doesn't feel comfortable with our existing talent, realizes that we will be playing in some close games next season and doesn't want to lose one on a bad snap. If this guy came on came on essentially proved to Saban that he is clearly better than anything we have........then using a scholly on a 4 year starter....regardless of the fact that it's a situational player makes more sense.

    Someone else pointed this out as well......it also means that the talent we have on campus is better than ever.

    To the poster above asking about Tinker, I don't know, I can tell you there are other scholarships players have that are full football athletic types.

  • I don't know that a long snapper will win you many game, but, I do know a bad one could certainly cost you one. On average, he touches the ball more than anyone beside the quarterback, center, or running back. If Coach Saban feels that this guy deserves a scholarship, and our team is better for having him, who cares?

    Obviously, he is comfortable enough with our depth at our other positions to feel okay doing it. For me, the implications of that is pretty exciting. I'm not sure why all the fuss.
