  • The kid is the top snapper in this class. Obviously that position is very important to the success of the kicking game. He was offered a scholarship because he has already been offered one by other schools. The kid isn't going to walk on to school A if he is getting an offer for a free ride to school B. Sure, players like Tinker may have been walk ons, but I doubt they were offered full rides to other D1 schools either (don't know this for sure, just a guess). If he's good enough to be offered by several schools, he must be worth it. If it means using a scholarship to have a better peice of mind with our kicking game for the next 4-5 years, so be it. If we didn't go get the best, we would eventually be bitching about the game we lost on block punt or game winning FG.

You mean like the time I was laughing at 99% of you (yes including you Mr. Yankee) for following along with the Cam thing? The thing is, my basement challenged friend, is there is a handful of you that just simply can't deal with anything said remotely negative about our football team or coach. Every offer is perfect, every move is the best of all time and that's all there is. If Saban invadeded Poland tomorrow you would be like "Saban has a plan" "lets gets these Pollocks". You are sheep, plain and simple. But what I find the funniest, and here's the great part, is you make fun of the AU fans for doing the same thing you do. Like, for example, a redneck in a trailer park calling someone white trash. You call them delusional for not being able to see their players/program/coach for who they are, then turn around and do the same thing they do. It's OK to think this or that is wrong. It's OK to have a different opinion. It's not the end of the world and I, unlike you, certainly don't deal in absolutes in these cases. Bahhh

    Great post.

  • At 242 lbs. is it really a stretch to think he might be asked to put on weight and play center? I know that someone else mentioned that in the thread, but it's not like this kid is coming out of high school at 205. He already outweighs Carson Tinker by 22 lbs. We haven't had a lot of luck in developing centers, and several recent candidates have simply worked out better at guard - Luatua and Lindsay. If the kid gains 15 lbs. between now and next summer and then another 15 during a redshirt year, he could be knocking on 275 lbs. Ryan Kelly weighs 288.

It could be that he's been recruited simply to be a long snapper. But is it possible that the staff simply likes his potential as a center?

The problem I have with the criticism here is that the people criticizing the move have absolutely no idea what the situation is. And it’s not just “Saban has a plan” BS, there are plenty of situations where we have seen players play and though might not have perfect information we are not completely in the dark either and therefore can at least claim somewhat of an educated opinion. In this case, we have one senior long snapper who is pretty good and consistent but nobody in this thread that doesn’t work at the athletic department can tell me without looking who his back-up is or who the long snapper will be next year. Nobody even knows his name much less how good he is, nobody has ever seen him do anything. For all we know, he is terrible. I don’t know how you can opine on whether or not this is a good move without that information.

Get out of here with logic. Weed knows all.

Bravo, +1. The Master of UA financials and simple logic.

  • Special teams are one third of football.

  • I was thinking over the situation and came to this conclusion: without looking it up if I had to guess I'd say that possibly 1/3 of all recruits never make an impact and of that 1/3 many quit prior to their senior season. Next 1/3 provide solid "depth" at the position. This player is a good player and given Alabama talent at most positions he could probably start at several SEC schools and almost all lower tier D-I schools. Finally there is that 1/3 that pans out and actually starts. If he is a sure fire starter next season or the following, I say might as well offer him. As much as we love to talk about the incoming class we all know there will be some kids who sign with us this year that will never see a meaningful down of football at UA.

  • The word I've just received says this long snapper just committed to the Tide. I'm going to be mildly entertained by the ensuing meltdown by Weedline.
