Time to cut the student ticket allotment.

  • Got there 2 hours early to go straight to the upper deck because it's so stupid how full the lower bowl gets. It's like 3 people to seat really down there, so going straight to the top is something I've done this season. Not to mention they re-open the lower bowl after the first half so a lot of the upper deck students went to the lower bowl where all their friends are. As embarrassing as that sounds it's the truth.

  • Cutting student allotment is very much an option, and did you really just write "stupidest"?! Then did you follow that up with "logical fallacy", and then say that a suggestion was a nonstarter. As for being an alum, I am, and attended Alabama Law, and the Business Graduate school, so I guess I meet your qualifications. You need to understand that the Crimson Tide belongs to the people of this state, and you have no more claim than the other people that love the team and have supported it for years longer than you have been on this earth. You don't really even have a clue.

I downvoted OP's original post because I think cutting student tickets is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. The University has been rapidly expanding as has the stadium, so cutting student tickets is just a logical fallacy and that suggestion is a nonstarter. Everyone has the exact same opportunity to attend the University and receive the same benefits that come with paying tuition and helping to further the University academically (for those students that actually do further the University academically). Those benefits include $5 student tickets and the opportunity to sit anywhere and stay for however long you want to in the student section. In fact, I've enjoyed those benefits so much that this is my sixth year paying the University tuition money and I have one more left (law school). I have no idea who the OP is or who anyone else is complaining about student tickets but I really hope you guys are all alums. Simply put, non-alums have absolutely no standing for complaining about student ticket allotments.

With that small rant said, I think one problem is rerouting students to the upper deck and then not providing any sort of indication of where they are actually supposed to sit. I realize that I haven't gone out of my way to find that information but I usually get there early enough to sit in the lower deck. Yesterday, though, I got to the stadium an hour before the game and was rerouted to the upper deck. I was with three other people and we found what appeared to be the only available seats but of course were actually assigned seats to other people. We just had to squeeze in and I felt really bad about making it somewhat less comfortable for the people who bought those tickets and were assigned those specific seats. But I, as well as other students, had no where else to go because I don't think there's actually a designated student section in the upper deck. That said, I never leave big games early. If it's Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Florida, etc. I'm not going to leave the game early regardless of the score but I realize that that's primarily because I consider myself a bigger Alabama football fan than the average person. But I do find it understandable that other students leave early when they are forced to go to the upper deck and sit in whatever unoccupied seat they can find. It just puts you and everyone around you in an uncomfortable position. They just started doing this last year and the University never really explained what they were doing or what students were supposed to do if they got there less than two hours before the game. So I think that's a problem that needs to be addressed. Either designate an exclusive student section in the upper deck or expand the student section in the lower deck. Cutting student ticket allotments is not an option.

Hard to argue with that last paragraph...

There is a problem with that upper deck utilization. My opinion, as an Alum, and a father of a student there, is to get rid of upper deck student seating altogether, and sell those tickets just like any other upper deck ticket to non students. Put ALL the students in the lower bowl where they can feel like a "unit"---I crave those days as a student on gameday, and I would HATE having to be separated from all the other students. By putting them in the uppers, we are losing a POWERFUL, intimidating force and dampening some of their collective "noisepower" (for lack of a better word).

I would urge everyone to write the AD, the President, etc. if you're an alum or a student, or the parent of one. There is no reason why this shouldn't be a fixable problem...

AND,finally, there is still NO excuse to leave early, ever. Don't care who you are or where you sit. If you have upper deck seats...well, it's bad luck, but you still need to stay the whole game, like everyone else around the entire bowl is expected to do. The players DEFINITELY notice and so does the coaching staff---what difference does it make if you just wait til 00:00 as opposed to leaving early? You could miss a LOT of stuff, and of course you're going to miss Ramma Jamma, which is one of the most glorious parts of a home game! We need every voice when that goes out....

Every student should have the opportunity to buy tickets. This is a university not a pro football team. Do what Usc does. Take away the chance to buy tix if they no show. As for leaving early, that is your individual business as much as it frustrates us all.

Palmetto, they already do take away from students who do not use their tickets. They track it through their Action Cards and penalize students who buy but don't attend unless they donate their ticket. For the rest who say taking away tickets from students is stupid, consider Alabama has the largest percentage of student tickets relative to the student body. For 2010, 59% of the students could attend any game. And considering freshmen cannot buy every game ticket, a lot more than 59% can attend 3 games or more. Students at Alabama are already treated better than at any school in America.

  • When did you attend school, was it recently because you are largely misinformed about the treatment of current students. The upper seating is a horrible idea, I agree with revoking ticket rights for those who don't attend or sell all of their tickets. However in many other aspects the University has lost the vision that it is there FOR the students.

I agree 11jtcrimson, I was in u4 mm and I was one of the few that was standing and yelling throughout the game. If I am 55 yrs old then the thirty somethings can get up and support the team. The people behind me were commenting that they wish I would calm down and give the shaker a rest. My comment is get up and support or you can eat my shaker. Husband a LSU fan (yes I know a weak moment for marrying a corndog) and we go to a lot of LSU games. Everyone is standing and yelling even 80 yr old grannies.

I am right there with you, a mid 50s female who screams and cheers the WHOLE game!

I've been the student sections biggest critic, but I sat in the student section saturday and it was packed. We got there nearly 2 hours early and it was already filling up.

    Am I missing something?

no one want to sit up top. the bottom is filled over capacity every time so that explains some of the empty seats up top. the others they get there for a bit and say screw this and go back home and drink.

Why put them in the upper deck anyways? Stupid if you ask me

Why spend whatever million dollars for an empty seat? I would rather look up there and see tubberville looking at his feet instead of a bunch of empty seats. UA needs to tweak the arrangement. I don't care if every student sits 3 deep in 1 seat if they do it anyway but sell the empty ones.

  • I think people that cant bask in a great win against a quality opponent, in front of a very large crowd that was instrumental in the win yesterday need to just mind their own business. I spend alot of money to let my daughter go the University and I dont need every week after the students and fans "do their job" and help the team win big....its shameful that you constantly harp on who is sitting where, the students want to sit together...and you are so unbelievable in complaining about this every week...even when the kids do well...your complianing...I got a message for you...get a petition that states everyone has to sit in their assigned seat, and stand the whole game, and yell....see how many sign on!! Im just a little tired of you know it alls ragging on these kids even when they are instrumental on winning the game...you disgust me dude..

  • Guess what? Even if the student section wasn't full (it was, we were packed into the lower bowl) we provided 99% of the noise for the game. Maybe if you lazy old fogies did your part to help and didn't sit on your hands the whole game I'd give a rat's ass about what you think. You're welcome by the way for carrying the rest of you when it came to gameday atmosphere. Other than that, all I have to say is kiss my ass. RTR

  • I think under the current penalty system, you should have to swipe out if you leave before the game is over and it counts against you to whatever penalty they think is worthy for the game, but then again, regular admission leaves whenever they want and are never-ever there 2 hours before the game, you can take any game you want and it usually doesn't fill up until kickoff, 30 minutes prior and there are still a lot of empty seats because theirs are guaranteed and students are a free for all, anybody that would really have a problem with that policy are the people who leave early for "reason x"...what kills me is people drive longer distances to get to the game and then want to turn around and leave to beat traffic...dude if you just spent 3 hours just to get to BDS what sense would it make to leave the game ealry , you invested three hours in a car + gas just to get there and leave before the game ends, just makes no sense to me.

  • My daughter goes to UA and confirms that more crowd into the lower bowl. Assigned seating is the way to go. The Greeks like to sit together. Give them sections based on frat and sorority. Reward them for packed sections and staying late with lower bowl sections each year. Give the GDIs some seats upper and lower. Take a picture after each quarter. A picture is worth a thousand words. Then let them get in with a student ID and a ticket. It doesn't make a crap who uses the ticket as long as they go to UA. If tickets go unused, don't let them buy any the following year. If they give them to their friends or sell them to another student and make a buck, who cares. If they swap seats to go with their dates, who cares.
The only other idea is to fence off the upper and lower sections, count rear ends, and first come, first serve. When the lower bowl allotment fills up, you go north. When I was at Tuscaloosa, the student section was segregated from the rest of the seats. You could not get there from other sections or entry ways. Not sure how it is now, but you could do something similar by controlled entry points. In the Houston texans stadium, you can't get to the expensive seats via the cheap seats. So let a certain amount in the lower bowl and the rest fill up the upper section. No saving seats either.
They could scan their tickets upon exit too. It just looks bad. They can fix it if they want to.

  • I don't think cutting the ticket allotment will lead to a greater percentage of consistent attendance from the students. Students who leave early will still be proportionally distributed throughout the remaining student seats. However, I have to believe that there are students who don't attend games and who also would stay the entire game if they could get student tickets.

One idea that I like is at the University of Dayton, where my girlfriend's nephew visited recently. At this Dayton, students scan their cards when they go to any university athletic event. At each scanning, the students accumulate points. The number of points allows students to gain priority at gaining football tickets. This policy encourages more attendance at less popular sporting events and allows students with the most school spirit, who are therefore less likely to leave early, to have priority in the football student section. Thoughts?

  • I don't have a dog in this fight, but personally I think you all need to quit your bitching. We just had a great win and from the look of things, the stadium was a great atmosphere. Some of y'all freak out if you see a sliver of grey in the stands. Enjoy the win and quit complaining.

Older people have no business complaining of students moving around or leaving early when a large percentage of you are never really there to begin with. Sure, your bodies are there, but you don't make noise and complain when others do. So when everyone decides they want to be like lsu and actually get into the game then by all means complain about the students. Until then, stfu.
