Top 5 recruits of the saban era you were least excited about

  • ...but turned out to be studs. And I don't mean that you disliked them (although you could) just guys who committed under your radar.

Dont'a Hightower - we got Courtney Upshaw and Jerrell Harris that year. I completely overlooked Hightower in my excitement for the other 2.

Mark Ingram - I'll be honest, I didn't follow his recruitment at all and even when we got him I had no idea how good he was.

Eddie Lacy - I mean he was good, but he came in with Trent!

Chance Warmack - There's always going to be one of those big maulers with a 3* ranking that comes and takes a starting job. I just had no idea he'd be so dominant and become a sure 1st rounder.

Robert Lester - I'll admit to thinking he was probably riding Julio's coattails. But he's been a great player for us and more than earned his own way.

    Gary Dodson

  • CJ Mosley- Thought he'd be good but not this good. Absolutely love his skillset.

Chance Warmack- Agree with OP. Thought he "might" start as a redshirt junior or senior. Happy that I was way wrong on him. One of my favorite players in recent Bama history.

Amari Cooper- Thought TiderinFl was exaggerating when he continuously posted how good he was going to be. Thought he bumped his head when he said he'd take Cooper over Dorial Green-Beckham. Boy was I wrong as I don't recall ever been this impressed with the skillset of any freshmen WR at any school. He's made at least 4-5 catches this season that I said "no way he catches this"......until he caught it. Crazy skill level. Based on what I've heard he ran in a hand-timed 40, I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up a top 5 overall draft pick.

Obviously there are studs that we expected to be studs coming in that don't make this list.

Tell people what they want to hear, they will like you. Tell them the actual truth...they may not.

I almost put CJ on my most excited list. I just remember listening to the radio on signing day while we were waiting on all our commits to sign and the local (Mobile) guys were raving about this kid from Theodore coming out next year. The hype never slowed down here so I followed him close and was pumped when we got him.

  • I can't come up with 5, and I don't know what you consider to be a "stud," but recruits I admit to being less than excited about that ended up being major contributors are 1) Smelley 2) Hanks 3) Christion Jones.

  • 1. Chance Warmack
    2. Marcel Dareus(underrated)
    3. Anthony Steen
    4. Dion Belue
    5. Marquis Maze

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • 1. Chance Warmack—He seemed like a solid commitment but I never dreamed he'd be a possible top-10 pick.

    2. Kareem Jackson—Didn't know much about him but mistakenly figured that since he was a Vanderbilt commitment prior to switching to us that he was just a so-so prospect.

    3. Robert Lester—Thought offering him was possibly just a tactic to sway Julio. Lester's turned out to be a solid, solid player for us for three years now.

    4. Amari Cooper—He seemed like a good player but I'm shocked his freshman year has turned out the way it has.

    5. Dont'a Hightower—I thought it'd be Jerrell Harris from the class of '08 who might start as a true freshman but Hightower turned out to be a great surprise.

  • Mt Cody (you got to admit. That first pic with the brow-crease and the near 400lb weight made you doubt his athleticism.)
    Robert Lester
Javier Arenas (didn't see that bad-assery coming)
Michael Williams (I didn't even realize he was in 2008 class. That kid is an awesome tight end.)

    Those are mine.

  • Javy was a shula recruit. he was already playing in 2006

    Mine would be:

Barrett Jones -- T. Love was our 5 start and J.M. Boswell were local dudes. i didn't think much on Jones
Michael Williams -- didn't even care about him at the time
D Milliner -- more excited about Fulton
Ingram -- was more excited about Barron and Matchet for some reason; even though his film was impressive
Dareus -- 3 star; who knew
Smelley -- just thought of him as some kid who played ball with my brother in HS. he was close to being a legit MVP for the BCS last year if AJ doesn't overthrow that long wheel route in the 2nd quarter.
AJ -- i wanted Sims to win the job...and i was wrong

Arenas was a Shula recruit. Pretty sure Ungerer suggested to Shula we recruit him.

Haha, Shawnboy. Instead of listing the top 5 recruits that u were least excited about, I think u just listed 5 all-Americans that were 4 stars or less

  • Denzel Devall

Huge career ahead for this guy....

    Hado04

  • Cooper. With so much talent who would have thought a true freshman WR was this polished and ready.
And I will admit AJ. I thought he was way too skinny and not mature enough.
Vlachos. Never thought he would see the field at his size.

  • OK, I've got three.

Vinnie Sunseri - I was pretty sure he got an offer because of his dad.

Robert Lester - I was pretty sure he got an offer because of Julio.

Barrett Jones - admit it. Everyone of you bought into the Tyler Love hype. This guy was an afterthought.

    BigAL1056

  • Vlachos, Maze, Warmack, Smelley, Square...all 3 stars, and good/great players

  • I am surprised some of you said Ingram.
Remember this? How could there have been any doubt? Any at all?
Not 2 months after his 18th Bday he opened Bama fans' eyes with this extremely impressive announcement at his school. (2 videos)

Everyone is thrilled about the 5 star guys. But until we started landing 4-5 consistently I was questionable about the 3 star and low/no hype 4 star guys. I know I'm not the only one
