UA Engineering wins world championship at Kennedy Space Center

  • Professor Al,

Is there not some way that Bama's Public Relations can get this message out via USA Today, etc.? I think it's time for Bama to be thought of as an EXCELLENT school of engineering. How do you propose that the "word gets out?"

    BTW, congrats on #1...

  • Congrats and Kudos, Professor Al!!! The perception of UA Engineering is far below the reality. I know when I was there,
I had an Engineering student tutor me in Physics and he was really good. I made an A and a B+ (missed an A by 1 point
on final) and it got me into Professional school. Great work and keep it up, Engineering like a CHAMPION!!! RTR!

UA media people are working on it. I am not sure of their plans at this point though. NBC13 in B'ham interviewed my students before the competition and carried their story on air. Hopefully, we can get a followup since we did so well.

I agree with you that UA must continue to market the College of Engineering to overcome years of perception that auburn is the top engineering school in the state.

It is difficult to get coverage for this type of event. Last year our 4th place finish generated zero media interest. Hopefully, we can take advantage of 1st place and get the word out.

On a related note, it is just as difficult raising money for these types of events. Sponsors are hard to find. Again, hopefully winning the event will change that.

    Roll Tide!!!

Out of curiosity, what goes into financing one of these events? Obviously, you have travel expenses. Do you have registration fees? Do materials come into play? In general, what would you say the competition costs and is that just once a year or are there several events that need sponsorship? Last question is how big is the gap between normal, expected contributions and what you have to spend? In other words, what percentage of that cost is covered by going out and rustling up some funds?

I know that seems like a lot of questions, but my brain is ticking away on some ideas and I'm just wondering what we're looking at. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not discuss this openly.

I advise 2 robot competition teams per year in the ECE Dept.

The NASA team requires about $15k-$20k per year to adequately support this kind of project. That money would cover everything we need including our travel (which is expensive due to the length of the competition), electronics and machined parts for the robot, software, routers, tools, etc.

The second robot competition team usually builds a less expensive robot and can survive on a $5k - $6k per year budget including travel. (By the way, this second team finished 6th out of 54 teams at their competition in March. So they are also very competitive.)

The competition teams are responsible for raising their own funds. We go out and try to get corporate and govt sponsors. NASA usually helps with some funding for the NASA team. Our goal is to always fund our own project without asking for UA support. This never happens since our fundraising never meets our needs. That's when UA will step in and offer funds to make up the difference. These funds come from eng Depts, SGA for travel, etc.

There are also compeition teams in other engineering depts. There is a baha team, formula 1 team, steel bridge team, concrete canoe team, etc. I am not sure how they are funded, but I would expect their funding process to be similar to ours.

If you have ideas on funding opportunities, I am all ears.
