UA has done everything but build a moat ....

  • ... around the football complex and yet there are still cases like the one involving the whack jobs from SWATS. From shooing away memorabilia hounds in the players' parking lot at the facility to renegade agents to cease and desist orders for a local suit shop owner, UA compliance wishes an overzealous booster was all it had to worry about these days.

What's next, a rogue Noni juice distributor camped out at the team hotel in Atlanta next Labor Day weekend?

Next to coaching varsity high school athletics (which parents have reduced to nothing more than rec ball in too many instances), you couldn't pay me enough to work in compliance at a place like UA.

As a HS Coach travis which one is worse?

The whack-o from swats, the sleazy agents, or psycho HS parent that thinks lil johnny is good enough to be the next peyton manning?

If there was only a way to coach HS kids without the variable of the psycho parents....pipe dream I know but its a blissful pipe dream.

It's a draw. With our kids making their way into varsity sports the past few years, I've been enlightened to what "varsity" means these days. Meant something entirely different back when I was in school. Sad to see parents work to divide squads rather than bring them together. Kids get it more than moms and dads do but all the kids hear are the moms and dads negativity.

  • I agree Travis. I coach basketball at a very high profile school in Indiana and the negativity from the "other" side is almost unbearable. Kids are told how good they are and that the coach isn't using them correctly and that Johnny is shooting too much, etc. Have to fight the daily battle to keep kids grounded and realistic in regards to their ability level.

  • I still think Tom from TTowns Menswear and that sketch Memorabilia store will be the death of us someday. You can only protect these kids so much, ya know?

  • Anyone considered why it is such a bad thing to allow student athletes to promote goods or services to the private sector? Perhaps the rules are what need changing to reflect reality rather than allow anyone else in the community to do it, chaining student athletes to archaic rules before letting them loose in professional sports without any experience in how to handle it. Sort of like restrictive parents who wonder what happened to their little angel when they went to college and turned into an alcoholic gambler.

I can only imagine what it's like in that sport up there. Our AD likes me because I've already told two parents to either be supportive of the team or stay away. I can say what he and the coaches can't. To his credit, one of the two I confronted has reformed and is now a positive presence for our team. There's no hope for the other one and, sadly, her child has D-I ability/measurables but you can already see where the negativity coming from her parents is affecting her effort/coachability.

That's not to say I agree with everything our coach does. I think with more structure and defined expectations for players and parents, he wouldn't have to deal with a lot of this crap, which, in turn, would allow for the girls to accomplish more as A TEAM. At the appropriate time (after the season), I'll discuss that with him in a civil manner (unlike the parent who went after his wife after a loss).

I wouldn't have a problem with it and I'm guessing neither would compliance departments. Haha!

that sounds very familiar. You know things have changed when the first thing you tell your team at the beginning of the season is "ignore everything your parents have to say that relate to what we do." We have to coach our kids to not listen to their own parents. Its a difficult tug-of-war battle.

  • What is not fishy about meeting some dude in a hotel room days before one of the biggest games of your life
and taking anything from him that he says will help you perform better in the game?! This I do not understand.

  • good stuff. I appreciate the job the Compliance Dep't. does. Hope they can keep these low-life's away

Exactly & this is when it falls on the players to make an "educated" choice.

No doubt and it's a question I'm sure has been or will be asked of Hubbard and others by Saban. Makes you wonder, too, if word of SI's story played a role in Hubbard giving strong consideration to coming out.

  • Nothing scares me more then T-town menswear guy. He gives me the creeps. He appears to be a male cleat chaser. And he is just shady with his store always having those autograph sessions.

I wish we could build a bigger mote away from this guy and how he befriends these players when it appears to be nothing more then trying to help himself once those guys are done with UA (i.e. so he can make some coin off that friendship).
