Anyone considered why it is such a bad thing to allow student athletes to promote goods or services to the private sector? Perhaps the rules are what need changing to reflect reality rather than allow anyone else in the community to do it, chaining student athletes to archaic rules before letting them loose in professional sports without any experience in how to handle it. Sort of like restrictive parents who wonder what happened to their little angel when they went to college and turned into an alcoholic gambler.

So you really want to unleash college kids to promote stuff
Wow that would turn out great

They use babies in advertising. They use young kids in advertising. And, they use celebrities in advertising. They use athletes who win medals in the Olympics in advertising. It's ok for them, but not ok for a college athlete?

Nothing scares me more then T-town menswear guy. He gives me the creeps. He appears to be a male cleat chaser. And he is just shady with his store always having those autograph sessions.

Agreed. Let's boycott TTMW and all related activities. Seriously.

  • Something else to consider in all of this is the use of former players by agents, memorabilia brokers, snake oil salesmen, etc... in helping to attract an audience of current players. Tough enough to police outsiders without them getting help from former players who have the ability to influence younger guys.

  • Instances like SWATS make-up probably about 10 percent of the things that go across a compliance officer's desk. For every case like this, there are nine others we never hear about.

  • BTW, actually there is a moat. It's underground.

... around the football complex and yet there are still cases like the one involving the whack jobs from SWATS. From shooing away memorabilia hounds in the players' parking lot at the facility to renegade agents to cease and desist orders for a local suit shop owner, UA compliance wishes an overzealous booster was all it had to worry about these days.

What's next, a rogue Noni juice distributor camped out at the team hotel in Atlanta next Labor Day weekend?

Next to coaching varsity high school athletics (which parents have reduced to nothing more than rec ball in too many instances), you couldn't pay me enough to work in compliance at a place like UA.

Excellent Post, Travis....on a lighter note...I WANNA MOAT, I WANNA MOAT!! biggrin

I can only imagine what it's like in that sport up there. Our AD likes me because I've already told two parents to either be supportive of the team or stay away. I can say what he and the coaches can't. To his credit, one of the two I confronted has reformed and is now a positive presence for our team. There's no hope for the other one and, sadly, her child has D-I ability/measurables but you can already see where the negativity coming from her parents is affecting her effort/coachability.

That's not to say I agree with everything our coach does. I think with more structure and defined expectations for players and parents, he wouldn't have to deal with a lot of this crap, which, in turn, would allow for the girls to accomplish more as A TEAM. At the appropriate time (after the season), I'll discuss that with him in a civil manner (unlike the parent who went after his wife after a loss).

My daughter played on a high school soft ball team that almost always went to the state playoffs...in the summer she played little league. Some of the parents on the little league teams were so much worse than playing teams from other schools through the playoffs and state championship games. I used to ask sometimes when she was playing in the summer leagues..."Where am I suppose to pick up my daughter's pay check? This has to be a pro league, right?" LOL
