UA is in good shape...

  • I've been on this site since the switch from TOS and was on the old one as well, but was absent for the Shula and early Saban years.

My question is this. How much did the staff use the phrase, "UA is in good shape for [insert recruit]..." during the down years? And what did it mean then compared to now?

    Just wondering.

  • I always thought the staff was pretty honest with their assessment of our chances. If they said we were looking good than we were. I think we lost a small number of those but that seems more likely because they were dealing with high school kids than because they were blowing smoke. To me the big difference is the quality of recruits with whom we are in good shape. Under Shula our typical class was no 5*s, 5 to 10 4*s depending on the year, and the majority were 3*s. Big difference between then and now.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

good shape has always meant Bama leads. It goes back as far as I can recall and I was here for Mike Shula's first class...Maybe even before that..

Up to 10 4 stars? I'm gonna go all Roger Clemens on you and say how you've misremembered. IMO Bama would maybe sign three or so 4 stars, but they sure as heck would be in the "top 3" for plenty of them. The board went gaga over a random 3 star signee.

  • You had to drink that Crimson Koolaid pretty heavily back then and as much as you wanted football season to start you dreaded it at the same time. They were painful to watch especially on offense during the Shula years. Those years really tested your fanhood from the Mike Dubose era until the end of the Shula era. After all the bitter the sweet is appreciated so much more.

With all due respect, nothing has ever tested my fanhood. I have experienced lean years in every aspect of my life, but I have always appreciated the effort of the sports teams that carry that banner. To be certain, The Crimson Tide has not won all of the games that I wish they had, but I have never dreaded a single matchup. Watching Alabama play has never filled me with dread.
