What I honestly expect from Yeldon

  • tlane21 said...

    Yeldon will get playing time, no doubt. You don't just get high praises from Nick Saban to sit on the bench. But I've read so many posts on here about how Yeldon will become the starter this season, but IMO he won't start at any point this year. Yeldon has never seen an environment like he'll be going to this year. LSU and Arkansas are the first 2 teams that come to mind. Lacy and Fowler have that "game experiece" Yeldon is lacking. Like I said, Yeldon will play, but I expect him to have a season like Mark Ingram had. Around 150 carries and a little over 700 yards. Maybe not the 12 touchdowns Ingram had as a freshman, but the kid will definetly see the end zone. Its hard for me to see a true freshman come into the best team in the nation, in the toughest conference in the nation, and play some of the toughest competition, and start. A good year(and i'm being realistic) for Yeldon would be about 115-130 carries and 650-700 yards and maybe 6 touchdowns. That's a good year for a true freshman. Just my opinion on Yeldon. I think the kid will be the star for this team in the future, just not this season.

    I'm as big a Yeldon fan as any and think he is the next great one at UA. Barring a Lacy injury I think your numbers are close. If Lacy gets hurts however, Yeldon will be the starter IMO and have a monster freshman year.

  • Lacy = 250 carries
    Yeldon = 100 carries
    Hart = 40-50 carries & 20 catches (3rd down back.....the 'Upchurch' role minus the time at fullback)
    Fowler = 40-50 carries

    450 carries between the 4 would be ideal. You could probably shave some off of Lacy and give them to Fowler in blowout times. Though sending Fowler into a blowout can sometimes be a worse form of running up the score than throwing 4 verts constantly.

    Dee Hart is being seriously overlooked by everybody. People forget about all the hype he generated in the spring before he got injured.

    Thank you! I'm not overlooking TJY, but think folks are slepping on Hart.

    Not overlooked, just reality. There just arent many snaps available, when it comes to 'scatback' type RBs, on a Nick Saban team. TJ showed out @ A-Day, and is also an elite reciever out of the backfield. Saban plays RBs that attack the line of scrimmage, and break tackles in traffic.

    Hart will be a 'situational' player @ Bama. He certainly doesnt have the size to be a pass protector.

  • I think his role will expand as the season goes along. People forget that even though Trent played a lot his freshman year, he didn't even get a carry vs. Va Tech until the game had been decided.

    Trent did not enroll early. Huge difference. Yeldon also does not have a heisman trophy winner in front of him.

  • I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that Yeldon will have 50% as many receiving yards as rushing yards.

    Why? Guy is amazing in space. He is going to be our "screen" guy.

    If everyone stays healthy, I'd say the highest he goes up on the depth chart is 3rd string. Maybe 2nd. But thats a big maybe.

    That's a big LOL.

    I see him getting plenty of playing time, but in the big games I believe its gonna be Lacy, Fowler, Yeldon. Just my opinion.

    Lacy/Yeldon then Fowler. Even BOL's War Room said that their sources say that TJY will press for STARTING carries.

    I expect him to do fine. There's no pressure on TJ Yeldon. He's a true freshman. We've got Eddie, and when his toe isn't hurt, he's tremendous (I think a first round talent). We've got Dee Hart who would have played a lot last year if not for his injury in the summer. We've also got Jalston Fowler, who I think would start for the vast majority of the teams in college football at RB.....

    I think people have high expectations as to how TJ Yeldon will do because he was a high profile recruit, and how he switched from AU to Bama, and because of his A-day game performance, but in reality, all he's got to do is just go out there and play. He's a great player, and the only pressure he should feel is that which is self imposed. If he goes out there and works hard and knows he's ready for each game and has done everything he could to be his best, then he'll be a bad dude......no worries, no problems....

    Has "high expectations" of TJ Yeldon ==>> zigzag.

    Not an insider, but from the insider reports, Yeldon is being prepared for heavy game reps. Saban has said in no uncertain terms that he considers TJ to be "a complete back." I've never disagreed too much w/ Nick's judgement. So, those of you who feel Fowler and Hart are going to be lined up #2 & #3 are smoking wacky weed. IMV, it's going to be predominately Lacy and Yeldon with Fowler & Hart pulling mop-up duty when the opposing D is worn out.

    My views are on the record, now. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it, this season.

  • I think you will see more of a true RB committee this year depending on the opponent and the health of the top four RBs.

  • I honestly think you should "expect" a little more. biggrin cause barring injury it's gonna most likely happen imho.

  • Would Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker not start their freshman year behind Lacy for a Saban team? Im not saying TJ is that good but what if he was? Most of us thought TR was slightly better than MI but MI had a Heisman and kept working hard. Would BJ or HW have been 2nd behind TR. Probably so but its interesting to think about.
