What Would Happen

  • shrug If the new playoff selection criteria added a componet that allowed graduation rates, player grades or some other scholastic criteria to play a small part in the formula? This will never happen but I think it would give Bama a boost over other top programs.

  • Well that would automatically eliminate *U.

Gotcha back even. Anyways, that's not a bad idea. Not sure how the execution would work, but, if it were possible I would be for it.

  • Even if it added just a point or even .5 or so it could impact the BCS and I think it would help schools that graduate players. Would have to limit it so it wouldn't impact more than 1 position or so in the polls.

  • In a small way it already does, since there is an APR cut line for post season eligibility.

Now, I know that's not exactly what you are getting at, but academics probably shouldn't be weighed against on the field results to determine who is the best team (e.g. who would win a game).

I agree but leaving this new format decision up to the bow tie boys is scary. I feel anything but the 4 best teams is going to be a total goat rope.

I dont think adding it to the calculation would be good, it should be separate from on the field results. But some kind of minimum APR to be eligible for the playoff wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Of course that would lead to more grade manipulation and academic shadiness than we have already. Dicey situation at best.

It would be funny...instead of strength of schedule arguments you'd have strength of curriculum arguments. "Well your team has a higher GPA but everyone knows your classes are way easier than ours blah blah blah". LOL the message board battles would be epic.

Quite often tweaks can lead to unimtended consequences. I just thought of this when I head the ADs are turning the selection of a format over the the bow tie boys.
