What does nick need to do to be considered better than Paul?

  • Who is idolizing? It is showing respect for a position or achievement.
Do you not call a judge " your honor" ?

Your logic is flawed and you clearly you have issues regarding personal respect.

Respect should always be a priority...
You call them " icons " yet scoff showing them respect.
They are teachers and modellers of young men's lives.
We refer to college professors by " professor" or Doctor if they have achieved such.
Is the appointed position of Coach not worthy of respect?
If you do not see it as such you have clearly never played for a real "coach"

Perhaps you should address some " life priorities" and after all if football or our coaches are of such low priority to you,, why are you starting threads about them on a message board that you PAY to be a member of?

And im sure you always referred to Coach Gene Chizik as such and never Gene or Jim right? Because your arguement states that position should be respected...or is it only our coach that cant be called by his first name?

And im sure none of you have ever called President Obama "Barry" right? Because being POTUS definitely should earn respect. Or is that ok too bc you think he's worthless and a commie?

Your logic should apply to all, even of you dont like them or think they are worthless, or your logic shouldnt apply.

I don't call judges anything because I'm not a lawyer and I avoid activities that would place me in a courtroom. However if I'm in a social situation with a judge, I'm calling him by his first name.

The fact that you're comparing a football coach with a judge says a lot though.

You need to learn some respect! NO ONE calls Coach Bryant, Paul. You should only refer to our present coach as Coach Saban.

    Hahaha.

  • Man isn't that Nick a hell of a coach? Nick is very skilled and I respect him tremendously. But don't forget about that guy Paul. He was pretty darn good too.

Are people serious with this "You must only refer to them as COACH SABAN and COACH BRYANT"? Get a grip.

Coach Bryant didn't make Alabama football it was built long before Bryant was the coach. Now he did revive it from a down era but so has Saban. I think with the attempt at parity in modern college football Saban may have had the most to overcome. Its difficult to compare coaches (or players) from different eras. You will notice one common theme amongst all former Alabama coaches. They had their greatest success while coaching at Alabama.

I doubt anyone on here is old enough (me included) to remember Coach Wallace Wade but he started the tradition at Alabama and is just as important in our history as CPB and CNS. We've been lucky enough to have 3 of the greatest coaches of all time. Now to your question, I think CNS has to win 3 more to surpass CPB. Its impossible to compare anything else but championships. CPB was trying to win them in his time. That was his goal and he did whatever it took to win them. So, is CNS in his era. There are things that made it harder in CPB's time just like scholarship limitations does to CNS in this time. How about the dominance of the SEC now over what it was 40-50 years ago? You can lose a game now in the SEC and still get there but it was a lot harder to get the necessary recognition back then. How about the race thing? Every other conference had black players but Bryant had to win with white only players until the 70's. The only thing that matters is NC's, imo. Bryant has 6 and CNS has 4. When CNS wins 3 more you can put him over CPB. Period. And you should know that as Alabama fans. Championships are our goal. Nothing else matters.

    why not

Coach Bryant's success went beyond wins and losses. Some of the decisions Coach Bryant made helped integrate the University and change the perspective of people in the South. I didn't fully understand it until I had an opportunity to speak to some black athletes from the era. Things have changed drastically. Coach Saban benefits from the foundation created by Coach Bryant's legacy. I will always hold Coach Bryant is high esteem for risking a lot to integrate and provide opportunities for Black athletes at the University. A lot of people changed their mind about racial intolerance because Coach Bryant said it was okay to do so. That's just my opinion. It doesn't diminish what Coach Saban has accomplished and will accomplish for Alabama in the future. Coach Saban will end his career at Alabama as one of the greatest coaches in modern history. However, he doesn't have to deal with a lot of the things that plagued Alabama's public perception because Coach Bryant paid that cost for him.

  • For those that don't remember Coach Bryant, Coach Saban is likely already there. For those that lived through Coach Bryant's years, Coach Saban probably will never get there, regardless of what he does. Coach Saban is a great, great football coach. The best currently alive. Coach Bryant was a folk hero and a legend.

Really? He left in 1930 to go to Duke. That would make you at least 90, right? If so, good for you and great to see you on BOL. I hope I can still hack a post out at that age or whatever it is we do then. Maybe tap our fingers using Google glass.

  • Don't forget Xen Scott. I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere his career was cut short by some illness.

  • If we win it all this year he will have 4 out of 5 with the only 3peat in CFB history. He will be the best of all time IMO.

I called Coach Gene Chizik Jim out of a lack of respect for him.
Do you say yes sir and no maam to your parents?
Do you call your teachers Mr. and Mrs.?
Do you call your doctor Dr.?

    It's all about the respect!

RE the OPs question, I went to school when Coach Bryant was there and both CNS and CPB are very similar in their approach to the game. Both believe in developing the total man and pushing players to the limit physically and mentally. Where Coach Saban is a little different is the way he is a master recruiter. He brings in more talent than Coach Bryant ever did. If he continuse to win at this level for the next 10 years, I'll have to put CNS above CPB in the overall rankings. Nationally they are 1 & 2 vs all other coaches historically.

Championship wise, 6 would do it. However, Coach Saban will never be able to match Bear's impact on college football.

I already consider him to be a better coach than Coach Bryant was, and by a signiicant margin.

FYI - people used to have an issue with Ian Rapoport when he covered the team because he would call Nick, saying he was being disrespectful. The day Saban arrived we asked him if he'd rather be called Nick or Coach and he said either was fine.

Call him Mike? Now that would have been disrespectful.

  • CPB was 72-2 at Bryant Denny Stadium (unbelievable. Thats home field advantage) And was awarded the Medal of Freedom by Ronald Regan. His legacy is not only in highest regard for Bama, but college football as a whole.

  • If/when Saban wins one more he ties Bryant in my mind.

  • IMHO it would take Saban 1 more.. that would actually make 5 for him total.. but all that is neither here nor there because he is about to crush Pauls' 6 total in 22+yrs lol... i actually got Saban givin us 4+ more in th next 6yrs..BOOM
