What if Ray Perkins had stayed? Why did he leave?...really

  • For some reason I thought he was on the verge of getting it together. Maybe he was just living on Coach Bryant's name and players. The stability wouldv'e been better for us and we could've taken Bill Curry from our record books. Thinking back I don't think he had the confidence to make it here. What was the real reason he left?

He couldn't beat the barn. He had some very VERY good teams, however.

Edit: I meant to say Curry. Don't know why I typed that.

  • Hugh Culverhouse, owner of the Bucs and Bama supporter, wanted Perkins badly. If you are an NFL owner and you want someone badly enough you more often than not get them.

I think Ray thought we would be in good or better hands with the next hire (Bowden) and we know how that turned out.

Huh? He won as many as he lost.

  • Perkins left for a couple of reasons. From what I remember, Tampa Bay wanted him very badly and they pretty much courted him for a couple of years. In addition to this, Perkins was receiving some bad vibes from a faction of Bama boosters. Some felt he wasn't sustaining what Bryant did. 84 season was first losing season in a long while and then we had an opportunity to compete for national championship but lost some tough ones in 85. Plus no SEC championships. 86 was looking good again until we started losing some winnable games and I think he pretty much gave up on Bama near the end of the season because he knew he had the NFL gig. Perkins had an NFL coach personality and he seemed to suit him best. JMO He did say later that he probably should have stayed and put forth a continued effort at Bama and win some championships. My memory is a little foggy but I think this is close.

He was 2-2 versus Barn. Lost in 83, Won in 84 & 85, then Lost 86.

  • Sounds about right KH. Bama was definitely in a transition period. Some good memories from those years though. Carruth in 84 aub game to Tiffin's kick. Good memories.

And don't forget Perk could recruit with the best of them. The 85 class was ranked pretty high. Probably the highest ranked class post Bryant until you know who showed up.

Things had slipped quite a bit by the time Perkins took over. Negative recruiting regarding Bryant's age was widely used, and Dye was getting players that had grown up wanting to play at Bama. Also, facilities had fallen behind.

Perkins was a great evaluator of talent and could recruit, building Bama's talent base back during his four years. During his time, the football building & in-door practice facility was built and the expansion of Bryant-Denny was initiated. People may forget he was also the AD, a practice that ended at Bama when Perkins left.

  • Being younger, when he left, I just couldn't imagine anyone leaving Alabama. So the consensus is that he had to rebuild Bama two years removed from a MNC? Also, Pat Dye made a living off beating Bama in those years. He lost some meaningful games but beat bama and all is well. Also of course getting the game on a home and home basis.

So he gave up in his last year? Seems like he lost some winnable games. Didn't understand him tearing down the tower, just think what it would be like to have it now.

Also, do you guys think he would've won any championships had he stayed? What was his overall coaching ability?

  • Money and I think he got a piece of the pie down there. I believe he received an ownership share to go to T Bay. I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly that was part of it.

Coach Bryant's last NC was in '79, and he coached three more years, so Perkins took over four years after. Recruiting slipped during that time, and with Dye coming in after the '80 season, he took advantage of it.

Dye was 1-1 against Bryant, 2-2 against Perkins, and 3-0 against Curry. His 4-year streak from '86-'89 seemed like an eternity at that time as it wasn't something Bama people were used to, and pressure was building with Stallings' '90 win a relief like Saban's in 2008.

Perkin's '86 team was loaded, but so was the schedule. Bama played #9 Ohio St, Notre Dame (not good that year, but first year Bama beat them), #6 Penn St (loss, they won NC), and #12 Washington (bowl game), in addition to a pretty strong 6-game conference schedule with four of those teams ranked. The only losses were to Penn St (they dominated), #18 LSU (close game), and #14 Auburn (Tillman reverse late in game). Perkin's '85 lost two and tied one, all to ranked teams. So, it wasn't like they were losing to Memphis St, as did happen in '87.

The home & home deal with au happened after Perkins left. Perkins said that Bama would never play there. Not sure what would've happened had he stayed, but that deal was made with Sloan running the athletic dept.

I believe the tower was refurbished and is still around.

  • Perkins had an impossible job of being the first coach following the Bear. The scrutiny and pressure was too much. He couldn't handle the proverbial heat so the kitchen he left.

  • Perkins was 2 and 2 against the Barn..Perkins words were "How did Coach Bryant stay here 25 years"? The expectations
were just too much for Perkins and he also was not a fan favorite..

I think it was Hootie Ingram that said the earth was back on it's axis, or something similar after the four year streak Dye had. Now that I think about it, a friend said the tower is back up. I for one, wished he had stayed, even if he did always seem annoyed..
