I love Saban, but I think our "pro-style" offense has not developed at all since he has been here. I put pro-style in quotes because I think that there are a lot of pro offenses that are more dynamic and force the defense to more difficult match ups than ours does.

I think our offensive woes over the years have been covered up to a certain degree because (1) we have had a tremendous defense, and (2) we have had some dominant players ingram, trent, julio, etc.).

Most will say it comes down to the QB position and Saban hasn't had a "game changer" vs. "game manager" since he has been at Alabama. I think this has been a contributing factor, but we are still very predictable and don't force the opposing defense to defend a larger area of the field. This is particularly evident in our vertical passing game (or lack thereof), but we have also had trouble creating misdirection behind the line of scrimmage putting the defense in a bad position. The Bama offense usually comes down to us having to beat a player who is in position.

When Saban was on at half time of the national championship game he kept mentioning how Auburn's offense caused bad matchups and resulted in defenders being out of position making it hard to defend. I don't understand why, if he has such a hard time defending what they are doing, we don't implement certain aspects of what makes them difficult to defend.

This year we aren't going to be able to just dump it to julio on a quick screen and let him pickup 8-10 yards by being more physical than the other team. We need to utilize our speed more and spread the field to open things up and give us some easy yards.

    JMO...

I have thought the very same things myself, and i could not agree more about our inability to stretch the field. Everyone was freaking out about losing Julio Jones, but really, I am sure we can find someone else to catch a 5 yard out pattern. Not that it was Julio's fault, he just runs the routes he is coached to run (whether it be through play call or check down). JMO.

  • Alot of it has to do with qb play. GMac never looked down field. I remember numerous times the past two years reciever would be open down field and he would dump it off to Trent or Ingram. HE didnt scare nobody. But our offense as a whole did. I can assure you of that. McElwain has worked with what he has. No matter who the qb is this year, I believe we take more shots down field.

  • At some times last year we just failed to execute. I dont think anything is wrong with our "system" but we just killed ourselves too many times in too many games offensively. Last year we did not play like a team that was as experienced and dynamic as we should have been on the O side of the ball. I also did not think that we rotated enough WR's in and out of the game.

  • Can we please throw the ball down the field this year? Im so tired of seeing 10 yd stop and out routes. We have the speed to get vertical this year. Hopefully we can work some routes 20yds or more into our game plan this year.

Nothing. There is nothing more effective than a power running game with some explosive play action to boot. Oregon, yea they rack up yards and points at record rates against mediocre or average defenses. The minute they play a good defense they fold like a cheap tent. AU? Same thing unless they have the best player money can buy like last year.

The offenses are about the players not the schemes. Over 400 yds and 35 ppg is plenty of offense.

  • 2 reasons that teams put up such large numbers compared to us.

1)Pace---Our offense snaps the ball with about 5-10 seconds left on the playclock even when we go no huddle.

2)Scheme---Our scheme results in a lot more 3-5 yard runs, 6 yard and less passes. The pro style offense is all about bringing a defense up or pushing the defense back and taking advantage of what they give you. AU and Oregon run spreads which seek to find mismatches, get the ball into that player's hands quicker, and then throw misdirection at you so that the mismatch is truly 1 on 1 as a safety or the containing linebacker will be out of position with all the misdirection.

We ranked in the top-30 in all statisical categories. The two areas we need to do better in is what i call Green Zone efficiency (within the opponents 40 yard line where you're in scoring range) and we need to do better at 3rd and short. In 09 we were awesome at 3rd and short, average in the red zone but great in the "green zone" as Tiffin had like 35 field goals. If we do both, it puts more pressure on opposing offenses to be 1 dimensional passing teams and it lets us have the ball more which weakens defenses against the run.

Agree with this. We are a power running, ball control, physical offense designed to take the will of a defense for 4 quarters. I don't want a gimmick offense like Oregon or Hawaii. That is not what we are about. I think it has served us pretty well in the last 4 years. We just had 3 first round draft picks go in the draft. We had our first heisman trophy winner at running back.

  • None of the offensive play calling is CNS.. That would be the one and only Jimmy Mac we have in our booth.. I think he is great and doesnt get us into alot of trouble but I hate that if we are not in a good flow that we can just open a game up. I think that the OP makes some good points but CNS love Jim and dont expect our O to be killing the statistical sheets against top qualtiy opponets.. Which is why we win alot of games too.. We have the D to keep it close and we pound them. High octane O's get in trouble alot.. Its 6 in one hand and half a dozen in the other.

  • Narrion D said "For example, our 2010 offense had 5-6 guys that have been/will be 1st Round Draft picks (ie. Julio, Ingram, Carpenter, Fluker, Trent and possibly Barrett Jones) and Oregon's offense had zero [as James will be a 2nd rounder at best] and 'Burn had 1 in their QB. Given our talent advantage, I see no reason why Oregon and 'Burn should have had offenses that were more effective than Bama's in 2010 other than the fact that they create "mismatches" that get more out of their talent than you would expect."

You are comparing apples to oranges IMO. Oregon plays in the no defense PAC 10. Look how a well below average SEC defense ( Auburn) handled them. Auburn's offensive line, although a little less talented, had played together for almost 4 years. Fluker was 1st year starter and injured for several games. BAMA also had more games that were in control late and called off the dogs (Penn State), where Auburn had to score high late in games to gain victory b/c of their porous defense.
