What scares me about the student section trend

  • * This is directed at all students, not just the greek section *

The problem I see is - these students are gonna be in the other section one day. They're going to bring what they learned in the student section to their regular seat. And they're gonna leave in the middle of the third quarter if we are playing MSU or Ole Miss. And Bama is going to start to be known as the school who can't keep a stadium full even when they're winning games.

I feel like the current set of students can't appreciate what they have because all they've known really, is a dominant Bama program. The other 80k seats are full of older fans who endured long droughts with terrible teams. That's probably why they stay the whole game. I was at Bama during some really bad seasons, and we stayed the entire game. And now, when my friends and I go to games, we don't leave early. Because we REALLY appreciate the product on the field.

I sincerely hope and pray that we aren't raising an entire generation of students who are going to bring this mentality to the sections of the stadium that, for now, are the only ones who know how to properly enjoy a Bama win.

  • I think its time to.give these threads a rest. There are so many things being assumed here that its not worth pointing them out.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

  • I don't see how everyone is shocked that the 18-25 demographic was more interested in partying than watching a game that had already been decided in the cold.

Praying about the students leaving a football game??? That sounds like a barner statement.

And why is another thread being started about this? You could of made your bizarre statements in the other student flaming thread

    This^^
Been going to Bama games since I was a kid, sat through losses in multiple overtimes (UT) and freezing rain (AU) to name a couple. When I became a student in I stayed every game, because thats what we did when my family went. My grandfather has had the same season tickets since the mid sixties and if you left early he was insulted. The players are still on the field giving an effort, can't fans give some effort? I know there are situations to leave early at times, but outside of those if you are a true fan you will stay. Even if its a blow out and the 3rd string is playing; I mean thats an opportunity to see what the future teams will look like, a chance to get excited for years to come. I am afraid we have a bunch of students who won't be very dedicated in the future.

  • I wish they would give priority seating to upper classman/honor roll in the lower level or based on merit. Then they should offer students (not included in tuition) the upper levels and a window to purchase them; if they don't sell then can offer them to fans.

I agree with EVERYONE that I wish those stands can remain filled for the entire game but there are circumstances to consider. This is based on going to the game with family/students.

1.) With the ass-kickings Bama is handing out, some students just get bored. This should be inexcusable but it is what it is.
2.) Night games when it is an ass-kicking. Think more people leave for night games in this scenario, not just the student section. It was awfully thin a couple of other games and plenty of people left at the end of the 3rd quarter during Ole Miss.
3.) Dates / Girls sometimes just wanna leave when the game is not in question. Some guys I see really struggle with this decision or it leads to an argument. Can be entertaining.
4.) Homecoming and a night game; a majorette/dance team member (friends little sister) had been working since 10 am and left to see her parents off after halftime. Understandable.
5.) Students leaving to continue drinking/partying.
6.) Students leaving to (Gasp) Study. The horror. The horror. Should be inexcusable but I guess I'll let it slide.

Sadly for the group of 14 or so I went with, left with 4 of us by the end of the game.

  • I was sitting in SS-9 and it appeared to me that the students stayed, so either I don't have a clue where the students sit or I'm just flat out wrong. However, there were TONS of people who were sitting around me that left starting at the end of the 3rd quarter. When I go to a game I stay until the bitter end, regardless of the oponent or score, but that's just me, I don't want to drive 3 1/2 hours to go to a game and not watch the entire thing.

Guess the concept of a figurative statement is lost on you. A 'barner' statement? Why so sensitive? These folks pointing out the students' lack of dedication must have struck a nerve with you.

How many games you leave early this year?

There are other threads about this. What's so important about your post to start a new thread? I usually tailgate outside the stadium but I've been to 2 games this year and stayed until the end. I'm going to Baton Rouge and will be there until the end. There are problems all over the stadium. I was in section C earlier this year and was told to sit down. That's ridiculous. Flaming the students gets old

  • One thing to keep in mind about the student section is how much ealier they have to get to the game than those with regular tickets. I just graduated last year and for almost every SEC game you had to get inside the stadium 1 hour or two early to get a seat down low. If it was a bigger game two hours early. Nobody wanted to walk up top. So when the game is seemingly in hand, you are out of booze, and your date is whining about it being cold a bar on the strip can seem rather enticing. I would always stay till rammer jammer for SEC games but I can see why alot of them would leave. They are in the stands for a much longer time than many of the other fans who dont get there till 10-15 minutes before kickoff

  • What if the players decided to leave when it is cold or the game gets boring? We would have a lot of foreits wouldn't we?

They would probably lose their schollies and then we would get new players??

I agree with you on staying until the end GooPhi, I always have and I always will. I go to the game for the team and the game, not to drink and party. I pull for Alabama, at the most they are going to play 14 games. I am going to watch all of every one of them if at all possible. There is plenty of time the rest of the year for other things.

  • I graduated a few years ago and I used to leave before the end of the some games. Didnt know what I had then and I havent left a game early since i graduated. Students dont know what they have now and wont until after they graduate and realize they can only go to 1 or 2 games a year if any at all. When they graduate and have to pay face value or much more to sit in the regular sections they wont leave early. Dont need to take seats away from them because when the game is close they will be there until the end and be louder than the rest of the stadium.

  • It amazes me that people that drive several hours leave early when attending their one game a year to beat the traffic. I see people do it all the time.

Then again, people that live nearby leave early to beat the traffic. These are not students but thousands leave early, they just don't all sit in one section to make it obvious.

SAY WHAT!!! SO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT JUST AS MANY PEOPLE IN THE REGULAR SEATS LEAVE EARLY? HOW CAN THIS BE? THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! ONLY THE STUDENTS LEAVE EARLY

Exactly. Everyone points fingers and puts blame on each other but both groups are equally responsible

  • I remember once hitchhiking 10,000 miles, swimming across the Atlantic and sleeping on concrete in front of Bryant Denny, praying every three hours for a full student section only to find my prayers unanswered and walking back to the edge of the East Coast dejected and thinking "hell I might as well ride a barge back home the way our students are crapping on our beloved sacred land" - OP I too fear and pray constantly for their appearance at football games. I say we all meet at Denny Chimes this Thursday evening and have a 24 hour prayer ritual followed by a bus trip to Baton Rouge - we can share the cost of a keg and get loaded on the way and scream bloody hell to those savage red stick lovers. Whose in?
