What should Grant's next move be?

  • I love the Mitchell suspension. It was neccessary. If were are going to be as bad on offense in the halfcourt as we are and play a lot of players, we should press and run the vast majority of the game. We have to find a way to create more scoring chances than we currently do. It bothers me that a lot of the annoucers that call our games call us "uptempo". I would say we are as deliberate as you could possibly be. This teams needs to either shoot better or play faster. I am leaning toward playing faster.

  • Definitely need to be playing faster. Grant even stated so a few weeks ago.

  • Saying it and doing it are two seperate things. Hope it starts tonight.

  • I concur....if we are going to run 10-11 guys out there a night, then run run RUN! Press and press some more, then run some more. Would have been easier to do with TM in the lineup, but you gotta get control of the team and nip the problem(s) in the bud. The only identity that this team has is they are scrappy, good defensively, but can't shoot. We get bogged down in the half court game too much because we aren't hitting the open threes, so force the issue more. Get the tempo up, throw a lot of bodies at the opposition, force turnovers, get more easy baskets (yeah, and give up some too), and get the other team dragging with fatigue down the stretch.

Also, quit taking so many threes! Take a step or two in if need be and shoot the open jump shot. 3 is better than 2, but 2 is much better than 0. A lot of these guys will hit their jump shots a little better if they'll step in a little. Just like JG....he can hit the 3 on occasion, but he's a pretty good shooter once he steps just inside the 3 point line. Some of the guys have range, but no confidence. A lot of the guys have limited range and no confidence because they are consistently shooting out of their range and thus lose confidence with each missed shot. If they'll play to their strengths, the guys will play better and gain more confidence in their shots. It's one thing to shoot the open 3 if you're a solid 3 shooter, but if you're not; then maybe you shouldn't take that shot. It's all about having a high basketball IQ. It's awesome baby!!!.....just ask Dickie V. (g)

  • Short term, play quicker; long term, recruit recruit recruit. We have to have a 3pt shooter and we have to get stronger around the basket. Not sure we have the right mix of players to make that happen this year, and time is running out on next year's class, with Bama posting a big 0'fer there so far. I like Grant, but if there is one thing CNS should have taught every coach on campus, if not every coach in the conference - the name of the game is talent, and talent comes from recruiting. Jucos's are ok, and have been very helpful to Bama in the past. Maybe that's all that's left now.

  • Recruit shooters and big men that will bang.

  • My old coach told our team once boys its easier to score if you get down there before they do
he was right we won a lot of ballgames that way.

  • Lets run. I like it. Start smaller and run hard for the first 4-5 minutes of the game. Then bring Green and Jacobs off the bench.

    Could go:

    Releford
    Steele
    Lacey
    Randolph
    Cooper

    Subs first in: Green, Jacobs

Players will fouls to give: Gueye and Engstrom

Why not. Shake things up. Can't get off to any colder/worse starts and it may be the fire for big runs.

I know it's hyperbole but this would be a horrible idea. When they break our press whom do you suppose would gaurd the bigs? All 5 of those guys would get consistently abused in the paint. And we'd be in foul trouble before the first TV TO.

If you want to run then keep JG in to play the post and go 4 guards. So, in theory you could go:
    Releford
    Lacey
    Steele
    Randolph
    Green

Then you could sub in Hankerson and Cooper at the guard spots. Biggest problem is Green's lack of conditioning has been obvious. I'm sure it has a lot to do with all the effort he's having to put forth to try to maintain position on both ends. Lacey is also not in ideal shape given his late start due to injury. Jacobs and Gueye cannot survive in that kind of uptempo, end to end style.

So, really we can only do the uptempo stuff in designated spots. Which is exactly what we are already doing. Only difference, we've had Tony and his terrible attitude that can adequately play the 4 on D and has the best skill set for that style.

  • I don't think we have the depth at pg to press the whole game, heck I know we don't. On top of that this team is lacking the Hillman and Hines types that are capable of playing aggressive defense on a consistent basis without fouling. You have to have great quickness and a fast first step to stop the dribble drive in order to play shutdown man to man defense. We lack this at few positions and teams will/have just break us down one on one when the shot clock is running down.

  • Find someone that can shoot a basketball. It is getting very old watching us miss wide open 3s!
