What's the story on Barry Kraus not returning?

  • For me Jerry Duncan set the standard for sideline work ("I don't know what the hell is going on but somebody better figure it out quick"). Never a question about what he was thinking. Barry was good and I think Chris will do a great job as well. Just wondering the dynamics behind the change..

  • Bump. I was wondering this as well

  • I really liked Barry on the sidelines. Helped bridge a generational gap between the goal line stand and Saban.

  • Barry lives in Indy, and I know has a lot of things going on with his business and as well in the past has done a lot of things with the Colts. It could be that with everything going on in his life it was just going to be too much to do all the work associated with the sideline reporting and everything else he has going on. Just a guess, but would make sense. From meeting him I am positive that if he felt he wouldn't be able to do his best work on this because of other things going on he would let someone know so someone else could do this so the broadcast will not suffer any.

  • "Well Eli, Smokey just came out of the tunnel, and he's about 100 yards away from me now, and if I had my deer rifle I believe I could drop him, back to you Eli" -- Jerry Duncan's comments to Eli Gold just prior to kickoff against Tennessee.

I laughed all the way through the 1st quarter.

  • Its time to bring back Kenny Stabler!!!! I know he didnt do the sideline reporting but I miss him in the booth, he just had a way of explaining and breaking down the play.

I'll never forget that one! One of the best quotes in Bama history!

All the way with you rolltide74. I don't know all the details of what happened with Kenny but if it was "just" alcohol related then more than half of the American population would not be able to be employed. Especially after 3 to 4 years. I'm saying this and I don't even drink. (no block on my reply....biggrin)

BTW; I have enjoyed ALL the broadcast crew. At least for the past 40-50 years anyway. But I must admit I do miss John Forney calling the wishbone.

  • Dont remember who we were playing but it was not going good and I think Eli asked Jerry what the problem was and Jerry said that we are getting the hell beat out of us, that is what the problem is.

Wow, I never got to hear Duncan much, and this makes me wish I had. That is GOLD! I am cracking up. God I hate that stupid dog.

  • No idea on Barry, but I'm excited about Chris Stewart.

  • Yeah always thought Barry did a great job. Sorry he is leaving.

Does anyone remember "The Block" against PSU in '89? Man I loved Jerry Duncan's reaction (just imagine Jerry screaming at the top of his lungs): "He blocked it Eli!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

That was so awesome and what made Jerry Duncan so good. He reacted to the game like a fan would. I appreciate that and loved every moment of it.

Chris will do a great job as the sideline reporter. I like Chris. Have known him since college (he was a couple of years behind me). Good guy.

UA can't take on the liability or image issues keeping someone on that has had multiple DUIs would bring.

There is only one word for Duncan and that is "great!" Could listen to him all day.

  • I guess I qualify as an old fart compared to most of you on the board, but I hope all of you know the history of Jerry Duncan as a player.
There is a reason that there is an award called the "Jerry Duncan I Like to Practice Award". He would be broken hearted if the trainers told him he could not practice. I don't think he ever missed a game in his career at Alabama as a 180 pound offensive lineman. He was one of the most intense, tenacious players I have ever seen. What he lacked in size, he more than made up in attitude.
Coach Bryant absolutely loved him. Coach Bryant made the tackle eligible play a huge part of our offense solely as a way of getting the ball to Duncan. The play was so effective that the NCAA changed the rules to make the play more difficult to execute and easier for the defense to see that the play was coming.
Duncan played in the first great era of Coach Bryant's coaching career at Alabama from 1963-1965. All we did in those years was win 2 NCs.
His love for the University is enviable, and I appreciate all that he has done for the University since his graduation. He has been a great ambassador and a valuable part of the broadcast team.

  • I can't stand Stewart, as anyone who knows him and his rep around Tuscaloosa should.

We need to go back to Eli Snake and rotate sideline with Bama legends.

Bill :), Snake is very analytical when looking at what the defense/offense is trying to do, and describing it to the listener, so you're absolutely correct in your opinion of his talent.

When he first started as an commentator on CBS's NFL games, I was really surprised at how good he was, and to this day I say he is far and away the best announcer we've ever had as far as telling the listener what is really happening, and just as importantly, why it is happening.
