When the football team is outscoring the basketball team...

  • ... it's probably not a good thing for the basketball team. That was certainly the case in Auburn Wednesday night.

    In its last two meetings with the Tigers on the football field, Alabama has scored 42 and 49 points. On a night that tested the attention span of the most ardent Crimson Tide fan, UA came up short of both those totals in a 49-37 loss to Auburn.

    It wasn't just the offense, though. In the first half, it wasn't a given that Auburn would reach the 36-point mark for the game. Instead, after ringing up 13 points in the opening 20 minutes, the Tigers scored 36 points in the second half.

    Still, it all goes back to an "offense" that continually comes up short of resembling anything close to a passable outfit. If the 3s aren't falling, it's going to be a long night, because this team is incapable of generating point blank opportunities out of its half court sets.

    For the game, Alabama made just 2 of 19 attempts from 3. An even bigger problem was the fact that AU outscored UA 21-7 off turnovers, a must-win category for a team that can't get enough transition buckets to offset its dribble-heavy offense.

    Instead, an Auburn team with no hopes of a postseason appearance made its season Wednesday night, effectively putting an end to Alabama's NCAA hopes in the process. Remember those RPI-crushing losses to Mercer (No. 173) and Tulane (No. 174) in December? Well, Auburn entered the night with an RPI of 223.

    There was no coming back in the second half Alabama, which actually led the Tigers 23-13 at the half. And it's doubtful there will be any coming back from a loss to one of the worst teams in a bad league.

    Mal won't fire him. We've got at least 1 more season of this and if Grant manages an NIT bid next season he still won't get fired.

    Attendance is going to be dreadful for the remainder of Grant's career. The program will become stagnant and the chances of getting a good coach will be worse each day.

    I liked the hiring of Grant and still think he can get it done but there's no denying that next year will tell the tale. Veteran club, fifth year of regime, no excuse for not reaching the dance and being a factor. You're right about fan support. It's not a given when things are going pretty good. When they're not, forget about it.

    Oh I don't know, if attendence really fell off Grant would be gone. LSU fired coach Brady years ago after he took them to a final 4 simply because their attendance numbers fell off.

    I'm with you. If he can't fix the glaring issue of this team through recruiting this year and this continues through next year I would expect to see a change. You have to let the guy try to right the ship before his top recruiting class are seniors though.

    Can you imagine how bad fan support is going to be next season?

    There will be no one that gives the team the benefit of the doubt like this season.

    if UA goes into complete free fall, perhaps that would be an option. However, this team is 6-3 in the league and if it wins out at home it will finish with 11 conference wins. He's not getting fired if that happens.

  • I've been a Grant supporter, and defender, but it is getting hard to defend him. I'm not one of these guys that will try to say he doesn't know basketball, but I am starting to question his ability to develop talent. It seems that our players are not only not developing, but regressing. Releford has been solid his whole career, but there were times in past years that he would basically take games over. I remember there being discussion of him leaving early for the NBA, not anymore. Lacey, Cooper, Levi, and Jacobs (his crown jewel class) are not only not developing to the level they should be, but seem like they might be getting worse, especially Levi and Jacobs. CAG appears to be a classy guy, and without a doubt helped UF become the power they are, but that can only get him so far. Our post offense is pathetic to say the least. I am not sure that firing him and going after Bruce Pearl is the answer, but we definitely need someone who will go the extra mile to put our program on the map like Pearl would. We need charisma and energy infused into our program, and I am starting to give up on Coach Grant being that guy.

    If you are going to fire assistants then you fire the head coach that hired them. He's not a first year guy. He's had a long time to fix the staff to his liking. If these guys aren't doing it correctly then it was on him to get it done right. Its not like we've been good since he got here. So, there was never a reason to keep any of the assistants.

    I'm just saying that if attendence fell apart its not a given Grant would survive. Now I don't think attendance will drop off that much, but who knows? This is not a fun bball product to watch even when we win.

    I have a ticket for next Saturday. There is zero chance I go watch us play what will be the ugliest game in the history of basketball.

    If anyone thought tonight was horrific wait till we play South Carolina.

    Brady went 5-11 in the SEC the year after the Final Four trip and was off to a 1-6 start the next season when he was fired. 6-17 over a 23-game stretch in the SEC will get most guys fired. LSU finished last in the west in each of his last two seasons.

    Interesting that you bring up LSU and Brady.
    As you stated, they had some great moments with Brady, then they hit a lull and fired him. What did that bring them?
    They are even worse now and have been totally irrelevant ever since and are on their 2nd coach since then.

    Only point being, firing a coach is no assurance that things will get better

    The SEC was much better that year. Put this year's Bama team in that year's SEC and we don't finish above .500 either.

    To be honest Grant is lucky the SEC has been awful lately, it lets him beat up on a league full of the sisters of the poor and inflate his wining percentage.

    Well the difference is that Brady could coach, he got LSU to the final 4 for crying out loud. Grant, not so much.

    Look, I don't have any confidence that Mal knows what it takes to be a good basketball coach and if we did make a change in the future if Mal alone makes the decision, then yes there is no assurance that things will be better. I have stated before that we need to put together a search committee of basketball minds to find our next coach whenever the Grant era finally ends, and end it will. Not this year, but it will end within the next 2 years, of this I have no doubt.

    Last year we were 35th in the nation in attendance, we currentlly paying in the top 20 nationally in $ for bball head coaching, and we are 3rd overall in SEC basketball winning percentage as a program historically. We can do a lot better than this for hiring a bball coach. Now will we in the future? Like I said, it depends on if Mal is just doing the hiring process himself or if we put together a intelligent basketball search committee.

    You may very well be right about the quality of the SEC. Not going to disagree on that. That said, any SEC AD outside of UK probably isn't going to fire a guy who is coming off an 11-win season in the league (NCAA bid or not). If it plays out that way this season, I don't think the UA administration will give it any thought. Right now, the league is Grant's biggest ally.

  • I thought Shula was going to right our football program too, every year we were a player short, or a recruit away from a great season, but he and his jumbo package couldn't get it done....

    Grant has had more than enough time, and to me we are actually worse now than lastyear, and don't seem to play as a team.
