Probably, yeah - it's a money grab. Considering there's still something like only 22 athletic programs that make a profit, a lot of schools are desperately wanting to be in a big-time conference.
I think the ACC and Big East are both in trouble. Wouldn't be surprised to see an eventual merger of some sort, or one folds.

As much as I understand where this super conference thing is going, I just don't see how it can actually happen. Four 16 team conferences is 64 teams total. That leaves nearly 60 other FBS schools SOL and, regardless of where they sit on the financial totem pole, I just can't see nearly HALF of all FBS schools just watching the 64 SC teams effectively shut the door on them every playing for the BCSNCG (or whatever we'll call it then). Hell, if they did just lay down and take it, that would effectively kill a large number of those ADs. I don't like the implications of that...

With Maryland and Rutgers going to the Big Ten, I'm convinced more than ever that there will be another round of expansion and the SEC will go to 16 teams.
So who do you want?
Personally I'm pulling for Hawaii (great road trips) and my alma mater New Hampshire, but right now I don't think their chances are very good.
