Ok so regardless the fact that he has a gun, which isn't illegal to own a gun. He lived in Eagles Landing which is on Longleaf Drive about a solid 1.5 miles from actual campus, if not further. Hell I've owned guns most of my life. If he was 21 he could have been licensed to carry the gun. I'm not sure Dyer's age though.
It says Moseley came to get the gun and he denied him access. Sad thing is I know Dakota's dad and i don't think he had a clue of that. Dyer told all the ones involved he wouldn't have anything to do with it. Goodwin takes Dyers gun (never says with or without knowledge) They all had been smoking on that fake weed. Seen a lot of people in Auburn area on that stuff that made them really trip out. They go rob the drug dealing kid in the trailer park thinking he'd never go to the police. Dyer stays in his place. Now from what I gather from all that Dyer tried to prevent/stay out of it all. After all he was a state witness not the defendant's witness.
