The student body at the University of Alabama right now is seeing something that may very well never be duplicated, by any team. This run will end eventually and when it does, those same students that are taking these days for granted, will finally realize what they have witnessed or worse, ... wish they had witnessed. It's impossible to make most of them understand this right now. Coach Saban won't be here forever and we won't compete for a national championship every, single year. There are so many of us older fans who have seen some highs but MANY lows. This run is epic. So, enjoy these years. Support this team. Witness history. Witness a dynasty ... all four quarters at a time.
Personally, I think the answer is somewhat in the middle (as most things are). I think that we need to reduce student seating, but only in the top areas. I was pretty adamant that students were cramming into the lower bowl which led to the perception about the upper bowl being vacant. I'm not entirely sure anymore.
Even though I went elsewhere for undergraduate studies I consider myself a Shula survivor. Now, that I'm here for graduate school I do find it amazing that there is a lack of appreciation of what is occurring. It's not everybody, and it's not this cataclysmic cloud hanging overhead that some would like to believe and promote, but it's there. Those flat bill NC hats are flying off the shelves, and people are generally happy, but there is a Championship fatigue/complacency being felt.
As some have said, I think that people will be in for a culture shock when we have a 3-5 period where we don't make it to the big show. Rome was to last forever and the sun never set on the British Empire, and one day Alabama won't win national championships 75% of the time over a 4 year period. I hope people wake up, and realize that.

The problem isn't that we don't fill a student section. The problem is that they leave early. So the 3 strike swipe rule doesn't really solve the problem.
The fact that we are even having this discussion shows how entitled our fans have become (it's really human nature though). I was at school during the Shula, Fran, Dubose years. We didn't leave early, because every game was in question. But I don't know that we were any better. I personally wouldn't leave a game early, but if we were blowing EVERY team out of the water, I can't say that my friends would stay the entire time.
Students now lack the perspective of the horrible years we have all had to endure. I can see how they can be complacent. I wish they weren't, but I kind of get it.
The only thing I hate about the students when called out on this...is when some smart ass replies with "well when your lady wants sexy time or wants to party, you leave the game" As if no female ever had sex other than during the 2nd half of Alabama vs Miss St. Give me a break. That's a cop out response.
You get 7 games a year. A YEAR. You get 28 games your entire school career. In 30 years are you gonna look back and be proud of the fact that you saw every game to the sweet end during one of the most epic runs in history? Or are you gonna be proud that you skipped out early to get your seat at Gallette's before the crowd got there?
15 National Championships, 23 SEC Championships, NCAA Record 60 Postseason Bowl Appearances, NCAA Record 35 Bowl Victories
I don't think it's a matter of not caring, but I think there are a healthy amount of kids here at school that take what they are seeing for granted. If you were a freshman in 2009 the amount of success you have witnessed is staggering. Success should be routine, but it shouldn't feel like a routine (hope that makes sense).
It's not everybody by any means, but the lack of student participation in Bryant Denny is not acceptable. We just need to figure out a system that rewards those that want to attend football games and punishes those who buy tickets to consistently (keyword) re-sell tickets or leave early.
Get Jim Beam and Miss Nattie on the phone.
There is obviously a student attendance problem, that has been well established but this is a pitifully-written article
"On a good day, the entire lower bowl, not just student organization seating, is only a third full by the fourth quarter. In fact, I distinctly remember a few games this season where the number of students in the lower bowl could barely fill four rows."
Every part of this is a flat out lie. If you agree with those statements, you weren't at any games this year.
Why all the venom toward the students? Without them we don't even have a football team. Or a university.
Yeah that's an inaccurate portrayal of the problem for sure.
