In 2000 Jemison and Maplesville ended the same way. We were down 23-19 with 3 seconds. We threw a deep pass against max coverage and Maplesville intercepted the ball. Instead of going to the ground the defensive back threw the ball on the ground and Jemison picked it up as Maplesville was celebrating and scored to win 25-23. I still have a copy of the radio broadcast that was covering the game. They could not believe what happened. But the official was right there with me as I picked the ball up, never forget that game.

Most Bama fans don't realize that something similar could have happen to us on the "Rocky Block" play. After the block, and while most of our team was celebration mode, the ball was still live. Fortunately Julio finally went over and fell on it. Had he not done so, any Tennessee player could have scooped up the ball and scored.

I see what you mean, but its incorrect. The rule states that a ball can't be returned or advanced by either team if the ball isnt going clearly backwards after the block. In other words, if the ball isnt clearly blocked and going in the opposite direction of the kick and/or clearly behind the LOS, it cannot be advanced by either team AND (for Kiffin's claim) after the ball has been kicked, the down is finished and anything that happens after that in relation to flags are dead ball fouls. Doesnt matter if it was 1st 2nd or 3rd down kicks. Once the holder gets the ball, the kicker isnt allowed to get a re-kick (if missed) if he tries to advance it on a bad snap. He's supposed to either fall on the bad snap or give the kicker the option to kick it with a hold and/or fall down if no actual kick was attempted. 4th downs are moot, obviously.

The new rule in college I believe is once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage it's a dead ball.

I believe that is correct sir. In the NFL, after a block FG that crosses the LOS, the play (not the ball) is still live untill the ball comes to a complete stop. But, if the kicking team touches ball AND the ball does indeed cross the LOS, the ball is now live. Leon Lett knows this all too well.

When the ball goes beyond the LOS, the kicking team cannot advance it. The kicking team (punt or FG) can pick it up and advance it if it is blocked and it does not go beyond the LOS. The only time the defense should attempt to recover is when there it is questionable whether it crossed the LOS or not.
