  • Yes. I may not like him but he does have some coaching ability, good recruiting from the USC west coast lock and pretty good national recruiting, weaker conference to play in. It stands to reason that one year the SEC will take itself out with its champions beating up on each other and an unbeaten USC will play an unbeaten big 12, B1G, or Acc, champion for the title. Could actually happen this year if Bama takes one loss. I can see OU getting through the Big 12 unbeaten and USC getting through Pac 12 unbeaten. If that happened USC would play OU for it all and Stoops would choke out in the BCSNCG. But Bama is not gonna drop one! At least not this year. RTR

I tend to agree with this. His coaching acumen is underrated, in my opinion. He coached incredibly well that 2009 season at Tennessee. They were outmanned most every game and almost beat Alabama that year.
I don't like the guy, but I think they will be in the mix at some point and could break through. But, as mention above, they better do it this year because the sanctions will be increasingly vexatious with each passing year.

If not this year it might be never. Barkley graduates and they are signing small classes for three years. The PAC 12 will be really weak overall this year too. They could make the game.

Spot on. I think the biggest thing is that, as you noted, sanctions only start to affect them next year. He has a solid shot this year at a title, but it will be at least 4-5 years before they can be this competitive again.

  • I do not like his style but he is recruiting at a very high level and his game plan for Bama and Fl in 2009 were flawless. I don't really understand the sanctions and how they are implemented but they are going to hit on a few game changers with the level of recruiting they are doing even with sanctions.

Actually I think our extreme dislike of Kiffin tends to lead us to a biased opinion in this question. But if you follow USC's recruiting at all you will see a high level of players committing to them. The USC tradition, the SoCal location, and Kiffen's ability to recruit will keep them well stocked even with the sanctions. Depth will be a problem after this year, but the Pac12 in my opinion will still be a weaker conference and going through their schedule with an unbeaten record is a higher probability in my opinion than Bama or LSU getting through conference play undefeated. So if the weaker conferences put out 2 undefeated teams you will see them in the BCSNC game. Now once we get to a play off system you are going to see the SEC dominance again. This year is his best shot especially if both Bama and LSU take a loss and a B1G or Big 12 or ACC finish undefeated it would be an undefeated USC vs one of them. If everyone takes a loss it will be SEC Champ vs #2 who ever that may be. But as stated previously I do not think Bama is going to drop one this year. RTR

  • I would love to say "NO" but if Gene Chizik can win one, then anything is possible.

    phyllis618

  • He is a better coach than several coaches that have rings so I say yes.

    scottchap

  • Yes, if he can get by Saban. I think he is a great coach and had he not been at Tennessee I think our fans would view him with some credibility.

    TinyLund

  • I still think he is an idiot and is riding his daddy's coat tails. They will lose a game this year.

    ragoo11

  • I don't really care for the guy but he does seem to be "becoming" a pretty good coach. When you consider the conference he coaches in coupled with level he is recruiting at it sure does seem like a possibility. However, there is a difference, I have noticed, between the kind of 4* & 5* players that Saban recruits and others. A great example is TN several years ago when they were recruiting at a very high level but were losing games they should not have lost. They were having team chemistry problems because of all the primadonnas. This doesn't happen with the team first, high quality guys. Brice Brown is a recent example. Lane Kiffin took this guy. Is this the kind of 4* & 5* guys he is taking over there at USC? If so, he won't win a national title. If he is getting the kind of quality Saban is, he may.
