Winston has to beat out this guy to play in the next 3 years

  • if you are worried about a qb this year think again, we are set for a couple years. P.sims was ranked #1 by espn, #2 scouts, #2 rivals. I don't see anybody with these stats this year.

  • Well, if he wins the job. If Sims loses the starting job, he will transfer.

  • At fsu, it's my guess Winston will never beat out Jacob Coker or Sean McGuire unless he quits playing baseball.

If he plays baseball and beats out those two go ahead and give him a Heisman.

I wish people would stop speculating that like it's a definite thing. It could happen but we don't know that for sure. DJ Shockley sat behind the guy at UGA one year ahead of him because he got a little PT and knew he was right in line to play full time at any moment. Then he had his senior year to run the show outright and I believe that was their Sugar Bowl year but I could be wrong.

No one is a lock to start multiple years especially if you're transferring to a good school. Heck even Star Jackson didn't start and he transferred to Georgia State. Hope he does this year.

I predict Jake Coker will be starting at QB for FSU by his sophomore year. Jake is now 6'6" around 220 lbs. Great competitor. JW would not be handed the starting job at FSU either.

Didn't Star Jackson leave Georgia State this year?

  • Just worth mentioning... I think PSims will be very good too... But because he redshirted... If he is very good... He can go in the NFL draft after 2 seasons...good problem to have.. AJ could technically go after this year if he had a great year.. But I think he will be here for two years..
I would love to get JWinston... But really think he's going to MLB.. But even if he did.. He could still come back and play for us a few years later... But let's not forget Phillip Ely.. He could still develop into a very good quarterback...Coaches evidently thought he had potential.. GMac wasnt rated that high

  • Sims may turn out to be the best QB in Alabama history. If he does, great. But make no mistake about it...if he is going to leave early for the draft and be successfully drafted, that is exactly what he is going to have to be...the best in Alabama history.

In the past three years, there have been 8 underclass QBs who had what I would call a successful draft...going in the 1st or 2nd round, not in the late rounds. I'm not including a guy like Jevon Snead, who wasn't drafted at all. Take a look at some of their stats their last year (Bradford's year before his last one, because he was hurt most of his last year).

    2010
Newton...280 passing attempts, 66% completions, 30 TD passes, along with 1473 yards rushing.
    Gabbert...475 attempts, 301 completions, 3186 yards
Mallett...411 attempts, 266 completions, 3869 yards (hurt part of the year)

    2009
    Bradford...483 attempts, 328 completions, 4720 yards, 50 TDs
    Clausen...425 attempts, 289 completions, 3722 yards

    2009
    Stafford...383 attempts, 235 completions, 3459 yards, 25 TDs
    Sanchez...366 attempts, 241 completions, 3207 yards.
    Freeman...382 attempts, 224 completions, 2945 yards
(The year before, Freeman was 316/499 for 3353 yards.

In other words, every one of them (except Newton) broke Alabama's single season yardage record. Most broke our single season completion record. Most would be second on the attempts list. Most played on teams that threw the ball more than they ran it. In contrast, we threw it about 44% of the time last year.

Maybe Sims will go out early, but if he does and is successful, based on recent history of underclassmen QBs in the draft, it will mean that Alabama will throw the ball more than they have been, and Sims will likely own every Alabama passing record. I hope he does. But any QB prospect who wants to play soon will probably factor in the likelihood of Sims leaving early into his decision.

  • Are you kidding me. This entire subject is "pure" speculation until the kid finally commits to someone on Wednesday.
No one on this board knows where's he;s going until he makes it public. So why even discuss it. Getting really "old".
SPECULATION CENTRAL! Waiting until Wednesday to make any additional comments

Because that's all you can do about the future...speculate. Saying Sims will be a great QB based on nothing more than rankings and high school film is speculation too. He has a solid point and it is worth noting in the discussion.

Worth noting in discussion as a possibility is one thing but stating it as fact is completely different. Just saying.

Ok point taken. I was talking about this transfer talk and the seabreeze persistence on beeting it to death. I chose my words poorly because of course we speculate , it's a message board. I guess I just don't understand the logic with kids committing to bama and people jumping to conclusions about kids transferring if they don't win job. Doesnt make sense from my perspective.

  • Wow, you guys know how to chase good players off. I suggest you search for Bamamanager's post regarding this from yesterday. People were posting the same stuff about Trent back when he was being recruited. Recruits, and their families and friends read these boards. Some have even said their decision was based off of which of their final teams fan base posted and acted the classiest towards them or acted like they wanted them.

if you are worried about a qb this year think again, we are set for a couple years. P.sims was ranked #1 by espn, #2 scouts, #2 rivals. I don't see anybody with these stats this year.

Let me explain key points to recruiting...

    1. Recruiting is about the future. You recruit players for holes in your roster in the future. If you miss filling a slot 1 or 2 years in a row then you could potentially have a very young player step in when needed, that is not optimal. It would be optimal when AJ or Sims moves on to a have a qB that has been in the system and knows the offense and has played some.

    2. Recruits like Kiel or Winston are program changers or program advancers. look what Peyton Manning did for UT. Look what Tebow did for Florida. These are not your average 4 star recruits.

    3. High profile recruits, as mentioned in #2, can affect your current recruiting class in a good way. Does getting Winston lock us in for Black or perhaps DGB? Does not getting 1 of these top QB's hurt us with big time wr's. See the impact Julio made on our program as well.

    4. No one knows if either AJ or Sims will live up to the recruiting hype.

    5. No one knows what will happen once a starter is named and if one will transfer.

    6. Injuries..... We can't predict the future, but injuries do occur. Just look how quickly we became at the RB position this offseason. We are thin at QB and getting a stud QB helps ensure depth and potential performance for the future. No one is expecting us to land a QB for next year.

There is a lesson to be learned from the RB situation this year. Overnight we have a depth issue. Neither QB would be well served to transfer. They each have the ability to star in this system, and while only one can usually star at a time, it would be remarkable for Alabama to be injury free at QB over the next two years. It is likely that even if Coach does not adopt a two QB system for these guys (unlikely given his history) both will have their chances to shine in 2011 and 12. We need this kind of depth.

  • Or one Defensive End has to be released at the wrong time for him to be grabbing his helmet off the bench. You cannot have enough solid signal callers....just ask Cousins from Mich State.
