Women's basketball facing South Carolina in SEC Tournament

  • NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 11th-seeded Alabama women’s basketball team (12-18, 2-14 SEC) will take on six-seed South Carolina (21-8, 10-6 SEC) on Thursday in the first round of the 2012 SEC Tournament, which is being held at Bridgestone Arena. The game is slated to tip off at 9 p.m. CT and will air on SportSouth.

“I think we have played well over the last five or six games except for the Auburn game,” said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. “I’m looking forward to going into the tournament knowing we have to play South Carolina. We’ve played them, and I thought we played them pretty good. I think if we can make some shots we will have a chance. I do think the tournament is going to be a really exciting tournament. There are a couple of teams that have been playing really well. I think from top to bottom, the league has been playing pretty good. There’s been some upsets. This is going to be a really exciting tournament.”

Thursday’s game will be the third between the two teams this season and 31st overall. South Carolina has won the previous five meetings in the series.

In the first meeting, which took place on January 1, the Gamecocks came away with a 68-42 victory in Columbia. For the game, Alabama was 37.5 percent from the floor (18-for-48), while South Carolina finished at 46.6 percent (27-for-58). In addition, the Gamecocks pulled down 38 rebounds compared to the Tide’s 22 boards. Sophomore guard Jasmine Robinson led all scorers with 16 points, all of which were scored in the second half.

In the latest meeting on February 19, Robinson would again lead in scoring with 17 points, but the Tide would end up falling 69-55. Junior Kyra Crosby collected the first double-double of her career in the game, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. For the game, Alabama shot just 27.5 percent (19-for-69), while South Carolina was 55.6 percent (25-for-45). Despite the loss, the Tide led in rebounds (41-37) and steals (13-7) and forced 21 Gamecock turnovers.

Alabama is led in scoring on the season by Robinson, who averages 11.4 points per game. She is followed by junior Meghan Perkins, who contributes 9.5 points per game. Perkins is also the Tide’s leader in rebounds with 5.4 boards per contest.

South Carolina enters the tournament fresh off a 53-47 win over Arkansas. Two Gamecocks are currently averaging double-figure points, led by senior Markeisha Grant (10.8 ppg) followed by senior La’Keisha Sutton (10.4 ppg). Freshman Aleighsa Welch leads the team in rebounds with 6.1 boards per game.

  • Wendell is one of the all-time greats but I sure wish somebody could come in and spark this program. Proof that it can be done in a women's sport at Alabama is right down the hall with Sarah Patterson. The program has had some success to build on, although it goes back to when Dominique Canty was playing, Rick Moody was coaching, and the team went to the Final Four in 1994.

I just looked and Madonna Thompson has had an outstanding year at Shelton going what appears to be 28-2 before postseason play. I know she has been at least considered before but it sounds like now may be the time to move on her before another major program comes calling.

Anybody with any insight on her situation?

Bama women's basketeball has not been the same since Dottie Kelso passed. She brought in all the talent during the women's teams best years.

  • Lose your best players in basketball and try to compete in the toughest conference in America. We'll be much improved next season if the injury bug doesn't set up shop in Foster. I believe we have several transfers coming in as well.

If my math is correct, our SEC record under Coach Hudson is now 12-53. We have had the following consecutive game losing streaks in SEC play during that period -- 9 game, 10 game, and 11 game. I believe in giving coaches every opportunity to succeed but this program does not even have a pulse.

You realize Smith killed the program right? Recruiting decent in-state talent wasn't an option when Hudson got here.

I don't think people realize how badly Smith damaged UA women's hoops for the future.

How long does Coach Hudson need? 20 years? We are in Year 4 of his program and I see very little, if any, progress. Blame it on injuries, prior regimes, whatever but you cannot lose 5 out of every 6 SEC games and expect to keep your job. To put it in perspective, our average yearly mark in SEC play is 3-14. I would add that we aren't just losing -- we are getting embarrassed on an almost nightly basis.

Wonderful progress -- we were 1-11 going into that game and 0-3 since. If anything, that game shows we have the horses to hang with a good team, for one night at least. So what happened over the other 14 games?

If you can't see the progress, I have nothing else to say to you. It's not easy to win when you lose your best player in August then lose your top scorer in January.

Take Trevor Releford and JaMychal Green off UA's team and you see the results. We managed 15 points in a half versus a mediocre LSU squad. Thank God for Coop otherwise we don't break 40 that night.

  • Another pretty shocking stat -- our 12 wins over the last four years have come against the same six teams (Ole Miss three times, Florida three times, Arkansas twice, Auburn twice, and one each for Kentucky and Mississippi State). That means half of the SEC has a FOUR YEAR winning streak against us. Thank goodness for Ole Miss and Florida.

I don't think Alabama men's basketball is where you want to make your analogy that a basketball team cannot play short-handed.

I thought my retort was fairly apparent but, to be clear, Alabama has played some pretty strong winning basketball without two of its "best" players, Tony Mitchell and JaMychal Green. And that is not to mention shorter absences of guys like Nick Jacobs and Trevor Lacey with about a season long departure of a solid contributor like Andrew Steele. Grant built that depth in a shorter amount of time than Hudson has had. Shula had a tough hand dealt to him too with recruiting sanctions and injuries, but four years is enough time to make an evaluation on a program in my opinion.

  • On a positive note, I will say this back and forth is probably more discussion than the Alabama's womens basketball program has generated at any point during the past four years.

    Tony Mitchell isn't Trevor Releford.

Glad we have that cleared up.

Take away Trevor Releford and whoever else you want -- Anthony Grant would find a way to win more than 2 games in conference play. Of that I am sure.

If the situations were similar, Grant would be without Lacey, Releford, and Green.

Smith RUINED the program in-state. She alienated the high school coaches in this state and Hudson is still trying to repair those relationships to where he can recruit the state like Alabama should be able to.

How did the no-talent hacks on the womens squad muster the strength to defeat a top ten team in Kentucky? That win may actually be more telling than all of the losses combined.

We actually have a higher percentage of girls on Coach Hudson's team from the State of Alabama now (8 of 15) than on the 1994 Final Four team (7 of 14). And even assuming the well was poisoned to such a great degree in-state, which I believe is somewhat of an exaggeration, what is the excuse on recruiting out-of-state?

    He outcoached the other coach.

Seriously, go support another school or don't speak of things you know nothing about. All you're doing is looking at the season record and making your judgement based off that.
