i couldnt leave my son to coach a rival team

That would be tough for me to do.....

EDJR30 I totally agree with you, and those that want to flame you or say yeah you would leave etc... dont have their priorities in order. Your son is your son. He has three years left enjoy it with him. Money is the root of all evil. Im sure Sal doesnt have to worry about paying his utility bill every month. He's already had to miss being with his son in Pitt. these last couple of years. I wouldnt want to look back years later and regret that move. In three years if he is worth a grain of salt as a coach he can still go get another job. FAMILY FIRST!!! Heck I cant even stand to not coach my three kids little league teams much less against them in college. It has nothing to do with it being Tennessee etiher. Sure I hate them but I could not know that what I am doing (coaching my team) is so I can beat my son and his team. Just aint right in my mind. Vinnie is just not coming up and has a bright future, stay and enjoy that with him. Im hoping this is just a case for CNS to get CSS a good pay raise and he stays. Im glad we have CNS and dont want himto ever leave but if you guys think these asst. coaches arent just as important and he can just pick another up off the street to replace CSS you are crazy. It takes time for these staffs to gel and work as one. You better hope that they continue to stay as long as we can keep them.

No I would not....if I was going from 40 grand a year maybe...but if we're talking about going from 400 grand. I would not...sunseri could get a better job next year...he could be the dc at bama....if I were in his shoes id stay with son. ...its only 3 years and he'd be helping his son develop...I don't get his decision

Kirby could be here 2 or 3 more years. That would make Sal 55 or 56 years old when he gets our DC job...which wouldn't be a 100% certainty that he would even get it. Three more years as a DC before getting a HC job...he would be pushing 60, with no head coaching experience.

How many colleges are going to hire a guy who is almost 60 years old and has no head coaching experience?

We lost, IMO, one of our most critical assistants at the end of last year in Joe Pendry, and our OL did just fine. CNS has the ability and the resources to hire the very best. We'll be just fine.

Assistant coaches taking promotions at other schools, IMO, is like underclassmen leaving early for the draft, especially if drafted in the 1st round. The benefits long term for the program outweigh the negatives.

for $2.4M guaranteed, a D-Coord role, and the chance to financially support your son and family for the rest of your life......um yea, you would.

This. My grown son would just have to deal with it.

Well he can get over it when you're at a coaches meeting designing a gameplan to ruin his day on the third saturday of october this year....

For those of you bashing Sal for leaving because Vinnie is here step back and think about if for a minute. I am not a father so I can only speak from a son's point of view. First let me start by saying that since Sal was the LB coach and Vinnie was ST/DB, its not like the elder Sunseri worked directly with the younger day in and out. Second as a son, I would want my dad to do what was best for him and his career. Vinnie will do fine on and off the field.

  • maybe Sal knows the d-coordinator job isn't going to open up anytime soon? I've been reading Kirby will only leave for the HC job @ UGA.

More money, quicker opportunity to be plucked for a head coaching gig, etc.

It's not a tough decision, really. I wish Coach Sal best of luck, except on the 3rd Saturday.

For me it would be. The time you spend with your son is more important than money. Your boy will only be here another 3 years tops and b/c you are a coach you won't even get to see him play. IMO there is no way I'd do it.

It's not like Sal hasn't made alot of money and not like he isn't going to continue to make alot of money.

100% increase in your salary gauranteed over 3 years and a big step toward your ultimate goal of being a head coach.

He also most likely has a relationship already with Dooley and would want to help him succeed. It seems like a no brainer to me...
