Memphian here.
Rendezvous is a tourist trap - not great food. But the ambiance is fun if you're downtown already. It's one of those things to experience, but if you want the best food, avoid it.
Overrated:
Rendezvous
Interstate
Huey's Burgers
Underrated:
Central BBQ or BBQ Shop on Madison (either are fantastic)
Gus' Fried Chicken
Dyer's Burgers
Here's another place you MUST go -- Cheescake Corner down near the intersection of G.E. Patterson and South Main. They open at 3. Better than Cheesecake Factory. Get the vanilla fudge if they have it. Thank me later. It's Heaven on a plate.

I live in Germantown... For a great BBQ experience it is the Commissary, Central, or Interstate (go during day light hours). The Rendezous is hit and miss.. from pretty dang good to dry and pretty dang bad. Corky's has one location that is good (the original located on Poplar).

Rendezvous was the best pork ribs I've ever had but the last time I went was disappointing. Pick up a can of dry rub while you're there. It's good when you're grilling. Corkys is pretty good too.

Hard to beat the Commissary. Rendezvous is decent, but I enjoyed the sausage and cheese plate more than the ribs. Cool place but not worth the wait on a busy night.

I go to Memphis every other weekend and their is a new bbq place just south of there in Southaven/Horn Lake its called Memphis BBQ Company. It is better than all of the above I promise you. The owner won the 2010 International BBQ Competition in Memphis. This place is legit the ribs are served wet or dry. They make a double decker bbq sandwich called the peacemaker the bottom half is pulled pork and the top half is brisket. Awesomeness. If you don't like it you can punch my sister in the face.
