red zone defense question

  • I was just looking through the NCAA defensive stats and thought red zone defense stats were interesting.

    Specifically, opponents have had 23 drives in the red zone and Bama has only forced 3 fieldgoals vs 11 TDs. While the 61% scoring is 4th nationally, is this scoring distribution is concerning? I thought it looked weird, so I looked at some others that are recognized to have good defenses.

    Comparing to other good def (using total def stats):
    ND -- 29 drives with 7 TDs and 11 FGs
    Florida -- 29 drives with 12 TDs and 8 FGs
    Fla State -- 23 drives with 12 TDs and 7 FGs
    LSU -- 27 drives with 19 TDs and 3 FGs
    Michigan State -- 28 drives with 9 TDs and 14 FGs

    Just thought it was interesting.

  • Outside of a couple of games there were very few successful drives. I'm not sure what this stat tells us, but it does seem like teams either don't score anything, or get it in the endzone for 6. I guess if they managed to get that far successfully, it stands to reason they can finish the job on those rare instances.

  • Several of those we gave up were trash touch downs at the end of the games by the 2nd and 3rd string players. The first team D has done well in the red zone, imo......

    Good point. You are right in that several scoring drives were meaningless.

    I would have to go back and do some research, but if I had to guess off the top of my head, I would say that our starters have only given up like 7 touchdowns, thats just a guess, perhaps someone can be more precise.
