You have two problem (1) that is a FPE panel which is not produced any more maybe able to find a one from a electrician that has taken one out (2) you look to have a 60 amp service which is what the unit pulls. You may try turning the heat strips off while we are not havin extremely cold weather. Should be 2 breakers on the unit
Sometimes it is printed on the wire insulation or the cable jacket. It will have "AWG" after the wire size.
My first sig!
Wire needs to be #6 for 60 amps. No need to worry about voltage drop in a house unless you live in a mansion.
It has been a long time since I've done residential, but that breaker looks like u might could try a Seimens or GE or ITE. ITE's are hard to find. Just take a breaker to your local electric supply store and see if they have something that interchanges. Don't go to Lowes or Home D. Also look inside panel door and see if the manufacturer name is inside on the the breaker list sticker or somewhere else.
If u have to install new wire, get help.

Just jump that mug with a coat hanger.
Not the way to go the wire coming from the unit is only rated for 40 amps. Bigger breaker =bigger wire
Where do you live
Brother. From an electrician; It really would be best for you to find an electrician to help you with this... at least have one come and tell you what needs to be done. It's true what someone said earlier that doing a wiring job wrong can and will burn a house down. What area are you in? If you're near Florence I'll come and look at it for you for free.
How big of heat strip is in the air handler

Don't know about that. And to the question on where I live. My mothers house is in Helena
Okay electrical brethren. Can someone near Helena help this man out?
No kidding. This would be great if BOL could come through. A community like no other!
Sorry but to far from me. But that wire is to small to just change the breaker
