  • Thanks for the link. Even though I know only some intern will ever read it, I wrote e-mails to Senators Shelby and Session, in addition to the local congresswoman.

Unless you love Orwellian legislation, you need to do any little thing you can to get Congress and the Senate to listen to how wrong these bills are.

I know nothing about what this bill is discussing. Can someone in 1,000 words or less explain it to me?

Basically the government will take total control of the internet. By demanding search engines what sites can be shown. If a user of a website links something that is pirated the entire website can be punished. Also, if you knowingly stream, upload, download a pirated video you can be punished by jail time. In layman's term the government is trying to take total censorship of the internet. Kind of like what China has done within a communistic society.

"Kind of like what China has done within a communistic society", makes sense to me since we are headed for communism lite.

FYI, Obama is against the bill, just as we was FOR the net neutrality legislation. This is a Republican driven bill, with support concentrated mostly in the Republican controlled House. If you fully support a free and open internet, the Republican party isnt the place to look for it.

  • Just so I can get a grip on what this is about how is stopping pirating considered censorship? Isn't prirating another way of saying taking something that is someone else's property? If so, wouldn't that be stealing? If so, then why create a new law to say stealing is illegal?

My problem with new laws is that there generally speaking is already a law in place that isn't being enforced. Just use the laws in place instead of creating more bureaucracy.

Now I also don't consider pirating anything to be an example of freedom. So I don't support creating a new law and I don't support the notion that pirating should be legal.

Pirating isn't the only this bill attacks. If you have ever watched videos on youtube there is 90% chance you have watched an illegally uploaded video. If this bill went into effect as it is written right now. You could be charged with a felony. Because that would be considered streaming illegal content under the this bill and punishable by jail. Also, Facebook, Yahoo, Google, Ebay, Go Daddy, and many other companies are against this. Long story short you don't want this bill to pass.

If you actually read the legislation, it was internet regulation aimed at PREVENTING content discrimination by the major backbone providers. It is broadly supported in the technology community, which is where I make my living. The internet gives just as much priority to traffic going to your mom and pop shop selling baked goods as it does Amazon. Internet providers were looking to change that so they could allow a company like Amazon to buy a bigger slice of the pie and prioritize their traffic. How do you think that would affect small startups, or non profits like wikipedia?

    Mxylplyx

  • Thanks everyone for the explanations. Sounds like a terrible bill.
