  • While it looks like there was an honest attempt to protect children from some of the more dangerous work places, like everything the government touches--it screws it up..The language is too vague and anytime you allow for interpretation the average person loses and the lawyers win..Gee, I wonder who that would benefit.

  • I'm not a liberal, but I'm also not so stupid as to blindly believe propaganda from either side (which is what that article clearly is).

Child agricultural labor laws have not been updated in 40 years. In response to some pretty compelling data that shows that children under 16 are far more likley than those 18+ to be involved in fatal farm equipment accidents, the DOL proposed revisions to child labor laws and released the proposal for public comment almost 8 months ago (why is this news now?). As a preliminary matter, the DOL has clearly stated that the revisions to these regulations do not apply to children working on farms owned soley or partially by their parents or guardians, but only to children working for pay for someone else. Secondly, the proposed revision only applies to children 15 and under. In other words, the proposed regulation only applies to children 15 and under working for pay on a farm which is not owned by their parents.

Further, the proposed new law only prohibits a limited list of activities which are grossly mischaracterized by your article. For example, the article suggests that a child employed on a family farm cannot use electronic devices (like a battery power screwdriver). The proposal actually states that if a child under sixteen is going to operate "power-driven equipment" on a non-family farm, that equipment must meet heightened safety standards (i.e. modern rollover equipment, seatbelts, etc.).

I guess I fail to see how a regulation which prohibits paying a 14 year old minimum wage to drive a 1978 tractor without a rollover guard is "liberal."

I stopped reading at "I'm not a liberal, BUT". There is zero chance anything intelligent came out in the rest of your post.

  • The language is a little too vague in the proposal, but people getting their panties in a wad because they think the government is trying to prevent you from making your kid wash the dishes is ridiculous. The goal of the proposal is to make sure 14 year olds aren't going around driving some top-heavy piece of heavy farm equipment built in the 70's then rolling the damn thing into a ditch and killing themselves. Some jobs aren't meant for kids. Let the adults play with the big toys.

This is what's really wrong with this country. "I don't agree with you so I'm not even going to read or listen to what you have to say because I'm smart and your dumb."

Liar. You know you read the whole thing. You just don't have a response and you're slightly embarrassed for blindly lapping up propaganda just like the "liberals" you mock.

No, I actually quit reading there. Your opinion following that qualifier is invalid and not worth my time.

It is what it is. Your opinion definitely doesn't matter because you're borderline retarded.

No. I had it right the first time. Your IQ can't be higher than 68. That, by definition, is borderline retarded.

How do you know if your views are correct if you refuse to ever think critically? You refuse to consider, much less read, any view which is opposed to your own.

And why the venom towards anyone who disagrees with you?

“I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.”

Huh? It's pretty simple. Either you agree with me or you are wrong. That's all there is to it. Why would I consider someone else's point of view? Then we'd both be wrong.

ETA: And not only will I cut people out of my life for being liberal, I refuse to let a liberal into it to begin with. It isn't that I have a problem with confrontation. It's just that I can't tolerate ignorance and, while most conservatives are pretty dumb, all liberals are ignorant. There's a 100% chance that they're useless.

  • Farming is hard work that is performed by good, hard working Americans. So what if it's dangerous. Only 100-150 children die from farm related injuries every year and there aren't but 22,000 serious farm related injuries to children every year. These liberal pansies think that a child can't go through life with a missing arm or without a few toes. Good grief.

If my farm wants to hire a 14 year old, we should be able to put him on the same tractor that everyone else uses! It's been running for 30 years and it's only been rolled twice! Why should he get a special tractor just because he's 14? If my adult laborers don't get to drive a tractor with rollover protection and seatbelts, why should he, just because the government tells me they think it's better????

Next thing you know these liberal, government elites are going to be telling us that the kids working on my farm can't drive themselves to work just because they're only 14/ I have a buddy who's a painter and he says the libs are telling him that he can use paint with lead in it!!!! Now I know how the car manufacturers when the libs told them they had to put seat belts in cars.
