If the South seceded from the US today, could it

I actually know how you feel. I'm adopted and haven't had much access to my bloodline history so I know very little.

My 'first love' in high school was adopted. I think when he was in his 20's he did some research about his origins. I imagine that's a very complicated decision to make. Ever thought about doing it?

Ha, you'll love this; it's so Jerry Springer. I'm adopted, but not in the truest sense. My mom divorced my 'bio dad' shortly after I was born. She remarried when I was 3 and I was raised to think that the man she married was my bio dad. I found out when I was 12. She would never have told me.

I actually stumbled upon some documents relating to my birth when I was getting something out of my parent's safe deposit box. All it had, though, was my mother and father's names and a description of their looks. Haven't pursued it further yet.

That's so cool that you know so much about your family history. There is a doc here in town that has had a physician in every generation of his family all the back to the Civil War.

I have no idea about my ancestors; I'm a mutt. I could be descended from thieves and whores for all I know. biggrin

You can do the same thing I did. Talk to the oldest relatives you have, and get names, places, whatever you can. Then go talk to the Mormans! lol They are into geneology big time, and if there is a tabernacle anywhere near you, go there and ask for help. They have all kinds of incredible databases. After I got more info about who they were, census reports (Mormans have those), etc., I was able to get copies of war records, medical records, and even pay records. It is amazing what you can find with a little bit of effort.

By the way, the Mormans never tried to convert me or anything - there were simply very helpful.

I had no idea there were many Mormons 'round these parts.

We had one girl at my high school who was Mormon, a friend of mine. She went off to BYU and I think she still lives over in Utah.

We have some around here. There is a family that is politically prominent locally that are LDS.

Mullet: How in the world did you know that about Mormon's and geneaology? I get that they would keep meticulous records on members of their church, but general population? Live and learn, eh?

Like I mentioned, there are a good many around here, and happened to mention to a coworker, who was Mormon, that I wanted to root around in my woodpile some. He told me that the tabernacle had an office for that sort of thing, I don't remember what they call it - Family something or another. Apparently they are big into knowing familial histories for some reason I don't know. It has something to do with the culture of their church, kind of like they all are supposed to have a year of food stocked away - a damned good idea if you ask me. What the theological reasoning is, I have no idea. I did do some reading in the Book of Mormon once upon a time, and frankly it seemed pretty far out to me. They might have some goofy beliefs, to me anyway, but they make good members of the community.

  • The Mormons do baptism by proxy for dead people. That's why the obsession with geneology. You won't find that in the BoM.

So that's kind of like the Catholic church finding a Cam Newton-type loophole to grant an annulment to people who have been married 20 yrs. and have 3 kids.

Yep. They believe missionaries will visit the baptized person and if they accept the "restored" gospel, they go to heaven.

Hey, its good work if you can get it I reckon.

I just remembered talking to a Baptist minister friend of mine not long after my first visit to the LDS, and our conversation drifted over to the Book of Mormon. i mentioned some that stuff was "out there". He smiled, and said, "I just don't have enough faith for that."

    lol

Speaking of Cam Newton, what are the thoughts around here about Dyer leaving Auburn?

He makes a common point. Whether or not one believes the Bible or not, you can find the cities mentioned. The same cant be said for the south American cities in the BoM.

  • First, how are we (the south) thriving?

Second, this is the UNITED States. We have differing view points and differing people and we all coexist under one government. That is what makes us great. We do not turn tail and run when something does not go our way. We work together and come up with solutions.

Finally, my forefathers, including my Granddad (flying over Germany in 1943) and my Dad (Vietnam) fought for a UNTIED country and not a political ideology or agenda. It seems you have an agenda that is not being pursued. "Well lets leave the party!" Why not affect political change through working within our system of government? Do you quit at any challenge?

Just an addendum: I would like to quote Andrew Jackson (a prominent southerner), during the nullification crisis, " But each State having expressly parted with so many powers as to constitute jointly with the other States a single nation, cannot from that period possess any right to secede, because such secession does not break a league, but destroys the unity of a nation, and any injury to that unity is not only a breach which would result from the contravention of a compact, but it is an offense against the whole Union." (He also threatened to personally hang his VP "from the the tallest tree in South Carolina" and personally lead a federal force to crush the traitors who suggested succeeding from he Union)
