Mayan calendar/end of the world

  • It's amusing how many people get caught up in it, but this is an interesting tidbit. Borrowed from a friend, SIAP:

    There have been about 514 Leap Years since Caesar created it in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013. Also, the Mayan calendar did not account for leap year. So, technically the world should have ended 7 months ago.

    I am pretty sure that is the rationale that Harold Camping used to say the world was going to end last year....but I could be wrong.

    Ive been to Mayan ruins this year. A real Mayan guide laughed at the idea and said that was the worse hollywood movie ever made....2012 of course being the movie. He also said Apocalypto was very accurate for the most part but only person speaking Mayan was the little girl with the plague.

    But ya, he said their calendar keeps going but its a new cycle. So its all lies....go figure.

  • Not that I think the world is ending this year, but I'm pretty sure they didn't use our standard calender as a starting point. They were big on astronomy, we are the ones that figured out dates from their artifacts. Its not like we opened a book from the Mayans that said December 21st was the day. Its based in the stars.

    And yes, they also believed that the world had been "reset" several times, and that this was the end of the current cycle. Which does involve the end to all of us, and a starting over... so technically the world doesn't end, but for all intents and purposes, it does for us.

    That said, Dec 21st is my birthday, so I may have to throw an end of the world party. Then a few weeks later, watch us win another trophy.

    I was at the Mayan ruins right before Bama won the NC two years ago. The guide that day also laughed at the idea. She said the Mayans just simply did not make a calendar past December 2012. They did not say the world was ending. People just jump to this conclusion.

    This isn't entirely true. The long count calender end with a serpent pouring water out of its mouth, insinuating water being involved in the ending of the current cycle. That isn't jumping to conclusions, that's from studying their texts and figuring out what certain things mean. A poorly educated and poorly paid tour guide probably isn't the best person to refute years of studying by some of the greatest mind in the field of language.

    On top of that, if the guide really assumed that the calender ended for no reason other than they were tired of counting, the person didn't know very much about how they did things, or what they believed.
