Which would be better obtaining my CPA or CMA licenses?

CPA. CMA is not bad either, but clearly the CPA is the best certification in the accounting world. Are you interested in public or private accounting?

CPA is the gold standard for accountants, get it first. If you still want to continue your education get the CMA or CIA.

Alabama and Georgia have very strict requirements to sit for the CPA. You need 150 hours, basically a masters to sit. Look into getting a MAC or MTA if you like tax.

How old are you? The CPA exam will take you 6-12 months to prepare for and pass, four parts only offered two months out of every quarter, you probably need at least a solid month of prep per section. Public accounting is a great place to start, you will get tons of great experience but the lifestyle can be taxing (no pun intended), however if you want to advance in your career you will work overtime in any position in the accounting field.

I'm 29 and I already work with a State of Alabama agency, but education does not help with advancement or promotions.

I have both the CPA and the CMA. There are far more opportunities with the CPA. The only area where the CMA seems to have an advantage is in manufacturing. So if you are looking to go into public accounting, the CPA is the way to go.
