OT- Any Tax Experts that can help me out with a question?

  • Normally every year I get a refund from my federal taxes and I usually end up paying Alabama about $150. I work in GA but live in AL. I usually am about even with GA state tax. I normally just do my taxes on Turbo Tax because I just have a simple EZ form. This year I did mine and the state of AL is saying that I owe $1500. Nothing in my life is changed. Still file single 0, no wage increase, nothing different? Anybody know how this could be possible?

  • Why do you pay Alabama if you work in Georgia? I am not familiar with that. I have changed states mid year when I moved but never had this issue.

  • Make sure you are getting an AL credit for taxes paid to other states(GA). On the AL Form 40 and under the credits section, there should be an amount for taxes paid to GA. Hope this helps. PM if you need more help.

  • You pay taxes to the state where you work, not where you live. Alabama has been ripping you off.

I don't think this is true. I believe you would have to pay resident taxes in Alabama and non-resident taxes in Georgia. I work here in Alabama with people who live in Georgia and basically they have to do just the opposite. They usually get a refund from Bama and then have to turn around and pay Georgia.

I think this may be where the problem is. When I did the stuff on Turbo Tax this year it didn't even go over my GA state taxes. It showed me Federal and AL and that was it.

Make sure you get credit for the taxes that you paid to the state of Georgia on your Alabama income tax return. Complete Schedule CR on the Alabama tax return after you calculate that Schedule enter the amount on Line 18 of the Alabama income tax return.

At this point I think I am just going to take them to the guy my parents use and let him figure it all out.

I worked in SC for 4 years while I lives in Alabama. Bama taxes never entered the discussion.

This. On online tax software, its a little difficult to do multi-state. Make sure you setup an additional state, so hopefully it will flow through correctly. If not, under AL tax in TurboTax, find the tax credits and manually input the amount of tax paid to GA.

So basically you are saying there is no way I should owe Bama $1500? I hope that this is what you are saying.

You may need to upgrade your turbo Tax.. Premier cost a little more, but it will handle unusual situations including stock options, IRA's etc.. You can upgrade on-line.twocents Good luck!thumbsup

The difference in price between turbotax and walking in to H&R block is very trivial, and you get the advantage of audit protection. This last part alone saved me a boatload of money and stress when I got the nastygram from the IRS.

Obviously a CPA is the preferred route, but I think its probably overkill for most people.

  • Go to a first class CPA, as he/she will save you loads of money.

This. Never take advice on multi-state tax filing from someone who lived and worked it two different states for years.

  • You've got to file a resident form 40 if you live in AL but other posters are correct in that you should get to credit the taxes paid in Georgia. It's not uncommon to have to file multiple states regardless of where you live but after credits you shouldn't be paying double tax on out of state earnings.
