OT: Internet Providers

  • ***Staff, if you don't mind letting this stay on the Round Table for a little while that would be a huge help to me. Computers/internet is not my strong suit and I could use some advice from those with more expertise. TIA

I live in the Springville area, outside of Birmingham, and I am looking for a new internet provider. I currently have Windstream and they are garbage. Not only does my internet work poorly, but they force me to pay for a phone line that we don't use. I am done with them. I don't really know what's out there or who has the best service and if I could get some feed back from the board that would be great. I'm don't want slow service of course, but I'm more concerned with the consistency and customer service of the product than having blazing fast service. Anyone have any good suggestions?

  • I almost said Comcast until you said you wanted good customer service

  • I'm not sure Comcast is available here. I'd need to check. The internet is quality though?

Yeah it's the best I've found.

  • Cable internet appears to have come a long way over the years. I used to stay away from it because of reliability issues, but I just started back with Charter and it seems fine so far, and is incredibly fast. DSL has always been my choice for pure reliability. If neither of those is available in your area, your only remaining choices would possibly be some wimax over the air provider or satellite internet.

  • I use U-Verse for both TV and Internet now. I like both. It was lousy waiting for the install, but after that, the phone and tech service wasn't bad for things like ordering PPV games, re-booting instructions, etc.

Had comcast before. Liked the internet better with Comcast. Uverse internet can match the speed but it's more expensive.

I work for Charter and we offer either 30 mg or 100 mg speed and its blazing fast. 30 is ten times more than you get with the phone co or any other provider. 100 mg is just plain ridiculous. I have zero lag issues on anything and have several devices pulling on the modem. Just my 2 cents if we're available in your area.

  • I work for comcast and are customer service is not good to say the least but I'm a tech and are internet has come along way since I've been here so if it's available that's what I would get

  • Check out a Verizon MiFi device. It's portable and allows you to hook up to 5 devices.

Thanks sounds like ill try Comcast first if it's available. I know Charter isn't, so it sounds like U-Verse may be the next best option. Oh, thanks to the poster for the link above.

  • I have U Verse and the services are awesome. However, customer service is awful. If you get U Verse be sure to get your tech's cell number so you can call him directly when you need service because dealing with customer service will drive you crazy.

They do pretty good but you are limited to how much you use it. It is pretty pricey too. I live in rural North Alabama and its what I have. Does good since Im in a 4 G area but the limit is ridiculous. If you watch Netflix or something you could use you limit in one day.

I found out recently that what is available on Uverse is going to depend on how far you are from the Central Office of the phone company. Have "low speed" (6 Mbps) Uverse internet in my office now, but switching to Charter next week. Have Charter at home now after terminating AT&T DSL following months of low quality signal.

  • Uverse works great for me.
