Recommended hand gun for a female

  • I have been wanting a gun for myself a long time. My husband agrees, but it's just one of those things that we've never quite gotten around to. I grew up a country girl, so my daddy let me shoot rifles that kicked the hell out of my shoulder. I've also been told that I'm a 'natural shot' (whatever that means) with a pistol. My instinct is a Glock or Sig. Suggestions?

  • Hard to go wrong with a Sig. My mom has a Walther and she loves it. Mom, like you, is a natural shot. My dad was a sharpshooter in the Army and he said mom was twice the shooter he ever was.

Here is a decent link reviewing .22 handguns.

Mom's Walther is a sweet shooting, compact weapon. Light and fits snug in the hand.

Look at a S&W J Frame. You can get it in a .38 +p (which is a hotter harder loaded .38) or a .357. Get the Liteweight with the laser. It is a hammerless revolver which will be better inside your purse. If you have to pull it out, there is no hammer to get caught as you pull it out. Mark Whitmore at Marks Outdoors told us something that I never considered...when you have a concern about something in front of you, put your hand in your purse onto your gun. You can fire the gun from inside your purse (you can always buy another purse but not your life). This is the reason for a revolver vs a semi auto like a glock. The glock will have to have the shell chambered (unless you leave one in the chamber...not a good idea) meaning you will have to pull the gun out to shoot it. Regardless of the gun you get, make sure you get the laser. A lasered gun can be fired from your hip without aiming. You never want to extend your gun at the target since that means the gun can be taken from you. Your other hand can be extended to stiff arm the guy too. Many times a laser is enough deterrent to stop the situation.

  • S&W j frame .357 and load it with .38 special. Hammerless and its just an awesome firearm. If this is a purely safety issue go with the revolver, if you are planning on getting into shooting i'd think about the auto's, otherwise stick with the revolver.

  • And if its for safety, def. get the laser. Talk about point and click......

Wow, great tips on a gun and self-defense. Gracias. RTR.

  • Depends on what you want it for. Plinking or ? If you are a natural with a pistol why would your instincts lean to what I assume would be an auto? Just sayin. Go with what you are accurate with and will enjoy shooting repeatedly. What barrel length do you like most? If you just want to be a tough girl go with an 8 inch barrel 44 mag and impress all the guys. Choose the handgun Scarlett will enjoy and don't worry about what anyone else says. They all kill. :)

  • My hubby says a Smith and Wesson 38' hammerless. That is what he got for our daughter. I have a High Standard 9 shot 22 magnum, had it for about 30 years and wouldn't take anything for it.

Thanks for the input. Not interested in being a 'tough girl' and don't plan on anyone knowing I have a gun. I just like the thought of knowing it's there and I know how to use it, should the situation arise.

That is why my husband got the daughter the Smith and Wesson 38 hammerless. It is pretty much made for women.

I suggest a S&W J Frame (see link). Simple, safe, light, effective. I personally feel Glocks are too dangerous to carry loaded for the average person. The triggers are just too easy to accidently pull (see Plaxico Burress).

  • Then there's always the 1858 Remington. Just carry a few extra cylinders ( be sure to get one with conversion to brass cartridges like Clint has) for fast reloading. They sell them at Bass Pro.biggrin
