WAY OT: But, the same day Whitney Houston died...

  • These young men listed below also died that same day.
They did not die in a luxury hotel room nursing a drug or alcohol addiction.
They died, brave young men, in a harsh country half a world away from their homes
and families so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. You may or may not
agree with the war and that is not he point. But, they died as members of the United States
Military. The ones listed below are all Marines. God Bless them and their families.

    (1) CPL Kevin J. Reinhard 25
    (2) LCpl William D. "Billy" Spencer 20
    (3) CPL Jon-Luke Bateman 22
    (4) LCPL Scott D. Harper 21
    (5) CPL Joseph J. Reinhard 25
    (6) LCPL Eric J. Orlowski 26
    (7) LCPL Joshua M. Davis 19
    (8) CPL Michael J. Dutcher 22

    Remember their names!

  • You make a great point, but unfortunately, that is the world we live in. People are celebrity crazy and follow the lives of celebrities to a crazy degree. I hate it, but it will continue to be that way until people quit following that stuff and news outlets will therefore quit focusing on it.

The line between "real news" and "entertainment news" has really been blurred over the last couple of decades. Many blame the media. However, I blame the general population because the media outlets are going to give "us" what we demand and support. Look at what people read. I do not know circulation numbers, but I would bet more people read "People Magazine" and similar rags than read U.S. News and World Report.

Well, to be fair, the real world is pretty damn depressing.

  • Great post, and thanks to the men and women who serve, have served, or have even given their lives like the marines you listed.

"Whitney Houston died several hours ago. In other news, a totalitarian regime in Syria is still murdering scores of its citizens every day. Thousands die weekly in Sub-Saharan Africa due to hunger and HIV/AIDS. Antisemitism and right wing extremism is at an all time high in eastern Europe. Those who have a chemical addiction are subjected to humiliation, abuse, and much worse in our criminal justice system rather than being treated for their disease. Guess which of these issues got the most airtime tonight?"

I understand your point but the death of the woman is newsworthy because for the better part of 2 decades she made a huge imprint on many people through a once-in-a-lifetime voice. She had numerous issues which had to be lived out in the same public square she gained popularity but using her as your opportunity to point out the deaths of our brave Soldiers is missing the mark imo. There have been numerous celebrity deaths to make this point but the lady was at the highest level in her career at one point and was not deserving of a passing mention. Faults and all, she made her mark in her short life.

    Tide In The ATL

  • The first thing that actualy came to my mind was the bullcrap over whether to fly the flag at half mast for Whitney Houston in New Jersey...the fact that that sentiment would even be considered is ludicrous. On the other hand we should fly it half mast every day until all of our troops are back across our lines and are out of immediate danger. When you look at the statistics, EVERY DAY someone is lost to a conflict we are involved in, whether they be our soldiers, or collateral damage. It is just sad.

Comments like this make absolutely no sense to me...no offense to you or your friend.

Nearly everything we ever talk could be considered trivial compared to something else so don't act like you have come up with some fascinating analysis when just pointing that out. Why do we waste time talking about UA football on here when we could be worried about the starving and abused children in Darfur?

Everybody knows that bad things happen in the world every day as do many many great things. Overall the world is a great place, though I would much rather live here than Darfur.

By the way to say anti-Semitism is at an "all time high" in Easter Europe is demonstrably retarded. What is this guy 12 years old? Pick up a history book for fcks sake!

Oh damnit don't even get me started on this chemical addiction stuff. Nearly every single state has Medicaid funded substance abuse programs and most states have methadone. Unbelievable.

Your buddy is a dumbass. No offense.

Yeah, that one tripped me up too. Nobody has ever randomly woken up a junkie one day through no fault of their own. There's more that can be said on the subject, but it was pretty randomly inserted into that rant.
