Eblen leaves Tide basketball team

TUSCALOOSA _ Reserve point guard Ben Eblen has decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and leave the University of Alabama men’s basketball team.

Ben Eblen has left the basketball team.

The school announced the decision Wednesday afternoon.

“I want to thank the basketball program, the University, the Tuscaloosa community and my teammates for the best three years of my life,” Eblen said in a statement. “The relationships and memories created in Tuscaloosa will last a lifetime. Representing the University of Alabama has been a privilege I’m thankful for and I’m eager to receive my degree and begin the next chapter in my life.”

His departure leaves the Crimson Tide with just 10 scholarship players, all of whom will be heavily relied upon during the upcoming season. Although Coach Anthony Grant has a couple of established players who can play the point when starter Trevor Releford needs a break, Retin Obasohan of Belgium will also challenge for playing time after redshirting last season.

The 6-foot, 191-pound Eblen appeared in 92 games over the past three years and averaged 8.2 minutes per game. Last season he played in 29 games with one start, made four of 18 shots, and one of three free throws, for nine total points in 207 minutes.

Eblen also tallied 15 rebounds, 15 assists and seven steals.

He is scheduled to graduate in December with a degree in consumer affairs.

“We appreciate everything Ben has brought to our program over the last three years and wish him the absolute best in his future endeavors,” Grant said in a release.
